Joining our established and expanding Nuclear team as an Associate Waste Consultant means taking a key leadership role in delivering a diverse and growing portfolio of both international and UK-based projects. This position offers the opportunity to manage and support multi-disciplinary projects across all stages of the project lifecycle, from early client consultancy and strategic advisory support through to comprehensive turn-key solutions and project delivery.
Your responsibilities will extend across technical delivery, client engagement, project management, bid support, and ensuring delivery in line with AECOM’s standards for quality, safety, and environmental care. You will play an important role in supporting business growth, maintaining strong client relationships, and contributing to the continued success of our nuclear waste and decommissioning portfolio.
We are looking for individuals who can apply their expertise independently while supporting leadership across multi-disciplinary teams to deliver successful outcomes for our clients. Our projects range from consultancy support through to full project delivery and may be at any stage in the project lifecycle. We are seeking established professionals with strong experience in radioactive waste management and sound professional judgement within regulated and quality-assured environments.
We are committed to delivering cost-effective, optimised, and practical solutions to meet our clients’ needs, and are seeking high-calibre individuals, ideally with relevant industry experience such as:
- Working on UK nuclear licensed sites or strong knowledge of UK Site Licence Companies.
- Operating waste management facilities or supporting studies exploring the use of such facilities.
- Delivering consultancy commissions and project management activities.
- Supporting nuclear decommissioning projects or defining strategic decommissioning approaches.
- Facilitating optioneering workshops and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Supporting regulator engagement and licensing or environmental permitting activities.
We are looking for individuals who can undertake and manage:
- Waste management studies, such as strategy development, Integrated Waste Strategies, and radioactive waste inventory development.
- Waste-led decommissioning strategy development.
- Environmental studies, such as Best Available Technique (BAT) assessments and Environmental Aspects identification.
This is an exciting time for the Nuclear Team with an expanding pipeline of high-profile and technically challenging projects across the UK and internationally.
Here’s what you’ll do:
- Manage complex nuclear waste management projects from inception to completion, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to high quality standards.
- Provide technical leadership and expertise in nuclear waste management, including waste characterisation, treatment, storage, and disposal.
- Develop and implement waste management strategies, plans, and procedures in compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practice.
- Conduct and oversee technical assessments, risk evaluations, and feasibility studies to support project decision-making.
- Act as a key point of contact for clients, building and maintaining strong relationships to understand their needs and provide tailored solutions.
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations, reports, and documentation to clients and stakeholders.
- Advise clients on regulatory compliance, policy development, and strategic planning related to nuclear waste management and decommissioning.
- Support business development activities, including bid preparation, proposal development, and identifying new opportunities.
- Mentor and support Graduates, Consultants, and Senior Consultants to promote their technical and professional development.
- Contribute to continuous improvement, innovation, and best practice across project delivery and team capability.

Qualifications
Here’s what we’re looking for:
The successful consultant will have:
- A minimum HNC qualification, preferably supported by a relevant science or engineering degree.
- Extensive relevant experience with strong technical knowledge and leadership capability.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, delivering high-quality outcomes for clients.
- A strong understanding of engineering design principles and the ability to apply them within complex project environments.
