Job Description
The AECOM Tunnelling team seeks a Tunnelling Technical Director/Team Lead in Birmingham to lead a growing team of 15–20 engineers on challenging UK and international projects. The role blends leadership, people management, technical engineering, and client engagement. You will contribute to the UK tunnelling business strategy, report to the UK Director of Tunnelling, and play a key role in project delivery from a technical perspective.
You will be expected to: – Mentor and develop junior team members; – Communicate effectively across technical teams and with clients; – Foster a culture of safety, quality, and collaboration; – Lead business‑development activities and bidding processes.
Job Duties
- Safety culture and performance: Ensure safety is the primary concern for all team members, conduct risk assessments, implement control measures, encourage incident reporting, and deliver regular safety observations.
- Stakeholder relationships: Coordinate local work‑winning and business development, develop relationships with public‑sector and contractor clients, lead proposal production for new commissions, and review commercial proposals.
- Quality control: Provide accurate data and forecasting to the Regional Lead for Tunnelling and report on safety, financial performance, pipeline, and other indicators.
- Leadership: Define and influence workplace culture, set tone for communication and collaboration, raise morale, and increase productivity and efficiency.
- Collaboration: Create clear goals and rewards for the team, maintain inclusive work environment, establish and maintain relationships with clients and industry bodies to position AECOM for successful tender work.
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent) in Civil, Geotechnical, or related engineering; postgraduate experience in a leadership role with a tunnelling team.
- Chartered Engineer (EI, ICE, IStructE or equivalent).
- Excellent written and spoken communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in rock and soft ground tunnels, shafts, and deep excavations for transportation, energy, and utility schemes.
- Experience on large multidisciplinary projects and ability to engage with diverse disciplines and interfaces; may undertake roles such as Technical Lead, Design Manager, Project Manager, or lead bids.
