Job Description

Are you ready to join a talented team and shape the future of Transport Planning? We are seeking a Transport Planner to join our Newcastle team, where you will support the delivery of transport planning projects across a range of public and private sector commissions. You will contribute to technical analysis, support the development and assessment of transport options, and assist with the preparation of reports and presentations, working collaboratively with colleagues as part of multi-disciplinary project teams and under the guidance of more experienced staff.

The Newcastle transport planning team is delivering some of the most impactful and high-profile transport projects in the North East. This includes supporting business case development for major rail schemes such as the Northumberland Line and the ongoing feasibility study and business case for the Leamside Line. The team works closely with the North East Combined Authority, local authorities and National Highways across a broad programme of rail, bus, highway and active travel schemes, applying transport planning and technical analysis to support scheme development and investment decisions.

What can we offer?

As a Transport Planner, you will support the delivery of transport planning projects across a range of clients and project types, working under the guidance of more experienced colleagues. You will contribute technical inputs, assist with analysis and reporting, and develop your skills through involvement in a variety of transport planning activities.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Technical Delivery
    • Support the delivery of transport planning work across a range of projects, including data analysis, option development, assessment, modelling and reporting.
    • Assist with the preparation of technical inputs to support transport studies, scheme development and investment decision-making.
    • Contribute to technical analysis and evidence gathering, including supporting transport modelling and forecasting tasks, under the guidance of senior team members.
    • Ensure work is completed in line with relevant guidance, project requirements and quality standards.
  • Project Management
    • Support the day-to-day delivery of projects by assisting with task coordination, programme tracking and collaboration with colleagues.
    • Work with senior staff to help meet project deadlines and deliver outputs to a high professional standard.
    • Contribute to the preparation of reports, presentations and supporting technical documentation.
  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Support client meetings, workshops and consultations by helping to prepare technical inputs and presentation materials.
    • Communicate technical information clearly within the project team and, where appropriate, to external stakeholders under supervision.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible? Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Economics, or a related subject.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CIHT, TPS, ICE) and working towards chartership.
  • Previous experience in transport planning, with a track record in delivering consultancy commissions.
  • Experience delivering small to medium-sized projects and contributing to multi‑disciplinary teams, delivering work in line with DfT and HM Treasury guidance where required.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical outputs clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience supporting work‑winning activity through contributions to bids, proposals and client relationship development.

We celebrate diversity, including neurodiversity, and believe it enriches our team. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and abilities. If you are an applicant with a disability that requires reasonable accommodation to complete the application process, please contact us.

At AECOM, we value everyone's unique contributions and perspectives. If you meet some of the requirements above or have transferable skills you believe would benefit us, we would be delighted to hear from you!
