Overview
As a Principal Transport Planner, you will lead strategic transport planning, appraisal and business-case development within a multidisciplinary team. You’ll mentor colleagues, engage high-level clients, and drive regional growth of the transport planning practice. You’ll shape transport strategies and support multi-disciplinary commissions across national frameworks. This role combines analytical leadership with business development to deliver high-impact transport projects.

Responsibilities
- Lead project and technical delivery on transport strategies, scheme appraisal and business-case development
- Supervise team work to meet technical standards, schedule and budget
- Act as trusted adviser to regional and national clients, shaping strategy and technical direction
- Represent the business in client meetings, consultations and workshops
- Build and maintain strong client relationships across regions
- Support work-winning activities and lead bids in the region
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to win and deliver multi-disciplinary commissions
- Mentor and develop colleagues, fostering technical excellence and knowledge sharing
- Contribute to staff development, resourcing and succession planning in the Birmingham office and wider business
- Support strategic growth of the transport planning practice through innovation and thought leadership
Key requirements
- Previous experience in transport planning
- Degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Economics, or a related subject
- Chartered status or membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CIHT, TPS, ICE)
- Strong track record of delivering multi-disciplinary projects following DfT and Treasury guidance
- Sound commercial awareness and proven project and resource management techniques
- Adaptability to a wide range of transport planning projects including Development and Spatial Planning
- Experience applying advanced analytical techniques and industry-standard tools to assess network performance and test scenarios
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management with senior-level presentations
