Job Description
As Senior Commercial Manager you will undertake the role of Commercial Lead for a Sector or Sub-Sector within our Buildings and Places business.
As part of the Sector or Sub-Sector you will be responsible for driving commercial performance, strategic commercial planning, and contractual excellence across a diverse portfolio of projects. You will lead commercial operational elements, manage risk, and provide commercial expertise to Sector leadership, ensuring alignment with business objectives and sustainable growth. The commercial function is designed to link the operational requirements of the business with the key corporate functions such as finance, legal and risk.
This role combines strategic commercial oversight with hands-on commercial approach and management, offering the opportunity to influence business outcomes across sectors such as infrastructure, defence, commercial, and social infrastructure.
This role offers hybrid working from our key UK&I offices, with relatively frequent travel to client sites and AECOM regional offices as needed.
Here’s what you’ll do:
Leadership & Planning
- Develop and implement commercial strategies in our bids aligned with Sector/ Sub-Sector goals and growth plans
- Advise Sector leadership on potential market risks, opportunities, pricing and commercial trends/ benchmarking to support our bids
- Support the Head of Commercial to drive innovation across commercial element of the operation
- Work collaboratively with the rest of the Buildings and Places commercial team applying a consistent approach across the Sectors and reporting to the Head of Commercial
- Oversee negotiation and implementation of prime and subcontracts, NDAs, MOUs, teaming agreements, and JV arrangements working collaboratively with the legal team
- Ensure changes are managed rigorously with a focus on commercial implications of change, manage commercial risk and opportunity generally
- Ensure robust risk management procedures are embedded across bid and delivery phases
- Resolve contractual disputes and claims, ensuring timely and effective resolution
- Lead and implement governance process within the Sector and interface with various corporate functions such as legal, tax, ORM, treasury etc.
Commercial Oversight
- Oversee and support financial project budgeting in conjunction with developing an effective project delivery model with project leads aligned to commercial goals
- With support for the finance function provide effective project performance reporting across the portfolio
- Work with project leads to identify and assess change
- Monitor KPIs and cash flow to ensure commercial targets are met
- Deliver monthly and quarterly reports to Sector stakeholders as required
- Report to the Head of Commercial and support in the growth of the commercial team/ function, fostering a high-performance culture
- Coach and mentor staff on commercial best practices and contract management
- Promote diversity, succession planning, and continuous professional development
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain strategic commercial relationships with clients, sub-consultants, and key internal stakeholders to meet project objectives
- Represent the business in commercial negotiations (new projects and change control) and industry forums
- Attend client meetings/ interviews as required
- Influence bid/ delivery strategy and support work-winning activities

Qualifications
Here\’s what we’re looking for:
- Degree or equivalent in Business, Engineering, Law or related discipline
- Significant experience in commercial management across infrastructure, defence, social infrastructure or commercial sectors
- Proven track record in leadership or key role with commercial and operational responsibilities
- Strong understanding of construction/ professional services procurement routes, contracting models, and professional services frameworks
- Strong understanding of benchmarking and pricing and delivery models across infrastructure, defence, social infrastructure or commercial sectors
- Experienced in negotiation and dispute resolution
- Effective communicator with outstanding interpersonal abilities; listening to other points of view while still being persuasive
- Skilled in producing fee proposals, financial analysis, commercial reporting, and risk mitigation
