Job Description
AECOM is seeking a highly experienced Principal Electrical Chartered Building Services Engineer to play a leading role in the delivery of highly sensitive and classified projects across the Defence, National Security and Critical Infrastructure estate. This is a hybrid role and can be based out of our London or St Albans office. This role is suited to an individual with exceptional technical authority, professional credibility and discretion, capable of working on projects that require Developed Vetting (DV). You will provide electrical design leadership, technical governance and strategic oversight across complex, safety‑critical environments, acting as a trusted advisor to key public sector and defence clients.
The position sits at the forefront of AECOM’s secure programme delivery capability, combining deep technical excellence, client leadership, and multi-disciplinary coordination within a highly controlled and confidential context.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as Principal Electrical Engineer and Technical Authority on highly classified projects
- Lead electrical design across all project stages, from concept and feasibility through to detailed design, construction support and commissioning
- Provide technical assurance, governance and independent checking of electrical designs within secure programmes
- Develop and approve electrical strategies covering:
- LV power systems
- Standby power and resilience (UPS, generators)
- Earthing, bonding and lightning protection
- Containment, lighting, small power and specialist systems
- Ensure full compliance with:
- UK Building Regulations
- BS standards and CIBSE guidance
- Defence, security and classified project standards and codes
- Manage technical risk in environments with heightened safety, resilience and availability requirements
- Lead and coordinate electrical input across multi-disciplinary teams operating within secure framework
- Interface with trusted supply chain partners, contractors and specialist installer
- Review and challenge contractor designs, technical submissions and value engineering proposal
- Support construction activities including site attendance (subject to clearance), inspections, testing and commissioning strategy
- Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality, information assurance and design control
- Act as a senior client-facing technical lead, providing trusted advice to Defence, Security and Government stakeholders
- Build long-term client relationships based on technical credibility, integrity and discretion
- Support framework delivery, bid development and technical responses where authorised
- Represent AECOM in secure design reviews, governance boards and technical workshops
- Provide leadership, mentoring and technical development for engineers and technical specialists
- Undertake technical reviews and quality assurance of work produced by others
- Contribute to resource planning, capability development and succession planning within the secure sector team
- Promote a culture of technical excellence, safety, and professional integrity
Minimum requirements:
- Extensive experience delivering electrical building services design on complex, high‑risk or mission‑critical projects
- Proven track record working in defence, national security, nuclear, intelligence, secure government or similarly sensitive sectors
- Strong understanding of:
- Electrical system resilience and redundancy
- Safety‑critical and high-availability environments
- Technical governance and assurance processes
- Experience operating at Principal or Lead Engineer level within a major consultancy
- Demonstrated ability to manage confidentiality, discretion and professional judgement
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) with IET or CIBSE
- Candidates that hold Developed Vetting (DV) clearance are preferred as the role is subject to UK security and nationality restrictions
