You’ll contribute to projects that support the modernisation and digital transformation of the UK rail network, working with experts who are passionate about shaping the future of sustainable rail transport.

As an apprentice, you will:
- Assist in the design and development of railway signalling systems and layouts.
- Support engineers in producing design drawings, circuit diagrams, and technical documentation using industry-standard CAD tools.
- Contribute to the preparation of signalling control tables, data sheets, and equipment specifications.
- Help integrate signalling designs with other rail disciplines such as track, electrification, and telecoms.
- Participate in site visits, testing, and commissioning activities to observe the installation and operation of signalling equipment.
- Learn about key railway safety and assurance processes including signalling principles and standards.
- Assist with project documentation, planning, and coordination activities.
Qualifications
This role is ideal for school leavers (GCSE or A-Level) who can demonstrate the following:
- Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English.
- Three A-Levels (or equivalent such as BTEC Level 3 in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline), including Maths and a physical science at grade C or above – required for the Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship.
- A genuine interest in railway signalling, control systems, and transportation technology.
- Any prior experience, work experience, or shadowing within an engineering or technical environment (preferred).
- Interest in software-based design and analysis tools (e.g. CAD, logic design, or simulation software).
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- A logical, practical, and safety-conscious mindset with a passion for solving technical challenges.
- Strong attention to detail, organisation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and demonstrate initiative when working independently.
Additional Information
- Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible since CVs will be reviewed, and candidates selected on a rolling recruitment basis for either immediate or advanced offer start.
