Job Description
We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated Rail Civil Engineering Apprentices to join our Rail team. As an apprentice, you’ll gain hands‑on experience working on a wide range of rail infrastructure projects – from concept and design to implementation – for clients operating locally, nationally, and internationally. You’ll be part of a team that values collaboration, innovation, and technical excellence, working alongside experts who help shape the future of sustainable transportation.
Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing rail civil and structural design drawings using CAD and 3D modelling tools
- Support engineers in producing calculations, design proposals, and technical documentation
- Help integrate engineering designs from other railway disciplines such as signalling, electrification, and track alignment
- Participate in planning construction phases to minimise disruption to passengers and communities
- Contribute to sustainability initiatives across the lifecycle of rail infrastructure
- Participate in site visits to gather data, observe construction progress, or support inspections of existing structures
- Assist with project administration and record‑keeping
- Work towards achieving Engineering Technician (EngTech) status, and later Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English
- Three A-Levels (or equivalent such as BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering), including Maths and a physical science at grade C or above – required for Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship
- An interest in railway engineering and transportation infrastructure
- Some experience or shadowing in an engineering or construction environment (preferred)
- Interest in software‑based design and engineering tools (e.g. CAD, BIM, or 3D modelling)
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development
- A creative, practical, and adaptable mindset with a passion for problem‑solving
- Strong attention to detail, organisation, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team and show initiative when working independently
