Our Water Team in Scotland are delivering a diverse and high-impact portfolio of projects that are shaping sustainable and resilient water systems for generations to come. One of our most recent wins includes Scottish Water’s SR27 Enterprise. AECOM has been named preferred bidder for one of two Primary Designers on this transformational, multi-billion-pound programme. It is the highest value venture ever put into place by Scottish Water and will reshape Scotland’s water and wastewater infrastructure from 2027 to 2033 (with potential to extend for another 6 years).
AECOM will be at the heart of this ground-breaking delivery model, shaping design excellence at scale and working with Scottish Water and our Enterprise Partners to help drive outcomes that deliver value for customers in Scotland and go beyond net zero. This is a major win for AECOM and a powerful endorsement of our expertise, giving us a fantastic opportunity to deliver long-term, meaningful work that has large scale impact for communities across Scotland. This position offers an unparalleled opportunity to support on this programme and work alongside a talented, diverse team committed to innovation and efficiency.
Join our dynamic and multidisciplinary Water Team as a Principal Mechanical Engineer in one of our Scotland offices – whilst also taking advantage of work from home days through our hybrid work approach.
Here's what you'll do:
- Prepare feasibility studies, outline design, detailed design and construction support
- Produce Plant layouts, design drawings and mechanical plant selection including specifications, WIMES Data Sheets, Valve schedules, Equipment Schedules, lifting strategies, hydraulic headloss calculations and P&IDs.
- Liaise and collaborate with our water and other discipline teams including civil, electrical, process and mechanical engineers nationwide
- Visit site to carry surveys and support of liaisons with clients, contractors & suppliers
- Lead and contribute design review meeting such as HAZOPs, HAZIDs, ALMs and SWIFTS
- Act as Mechanical Lead on projects including WwTW, WTW and Infrastructure. Supporting the Project Manager and Design Lead to successfully deliver the Mechanical Scope to programme and budget
- Assist the Project Manager to set realistic programmes and budgets for Mechanical projects
- Be a Line manager for Mechanical Graduate, Engineer and Senior Engineers

Qualifications
Ready to push the limits of what’s possible? Here’s what we’re looking for:
- A degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering
- Be a Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution, such as IMechE
- A proven ability to deliver engineering designs, reports, drawings, technical specifications, and calculations with confidence and precision
- Hands-on experience in delivering innovative solutions for water and wastewater engineering projects
