The Opportunity
We’re looking for talented and motivated students to join our Transportation business line on an Industrial Placement, where you’ll gain hands-on experience, work on real projects, and develop skills that will kick-start your career.
Transportation at AECOM is organised into two main areas:
- STAP (Streets & Technology, Planning, Highways, Tunnelling, Ports)
- RSGE (Rail, Structures, Ground Engineering)
What you’ll do
Your role will vary depending on the team you join, but you could be involved in:
- Streets & Technology
- Designing and modelling urban streets and junctions using industry-leading software
- Supporting active travel and sustainable transport solutions
- Assisting with the integration of digital technology in transport networks
- Planning
- Supporting transport planning and demand forecasting studies
- Conducting feasibility and corridor studies for new transport routes
- Contributing to business cases and policy reviews for infrastructure development
- Highways
- Designing and modelling highway alignments and junction improvements
- Preparing geometric designs, drainage systems, and pavement analysis
- Assisting in safety audits and traffic management solutions
- Tunnelling
- Supporting tunnel design and analysis for road or rail projects
- Assisting in geotechnical assessments and structural modelling
- Contributing to feasibility studies and construction methodologies
- Ports
- Assisting in the planning and design of port infrastructure and marine facilities
- Supporting studies on capacity, layout, and logistics for ports and harbours
- Preparing technical drawings and reports for maritime transport projects
- Rail
- Designing and assessing rail infrastructure, including stations and track layouts
- Supporting rail systems integration and alignment design
- Assisting in signalling and electrification interface planning
- Structures
- Performing structural design and assessment for bridges and transport-related structures
- Supporting inspections and condition assessments of existing assets
- Preparing structural calculations and design documentation
- Ground Engineering
- Supporting ground investigations for transportation projects
- Assisting in foundation and retaining structure design
- Conducting geotechnical analysis for tunnels, bridges, and rail systems
Qualifications
- Are currently studying towards one of the following degrees: Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Highway Engineering, Railway Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Urban or Transport Planning;
- Are passionate about shaping the future of transportation and mobility;
- Have strong communication and teamwork skills;
- Are analytical and detail-oriented;
- Hold solid Microsoft Office skills ie, Word, Excel & PowerPoint;
- Strong numeracy;
- Self-motivation, enthusiasm, hard-working, with ambition and drive;
- Excellent research and report writing skills including web based research;
- Solid attention to detail and thorough approach to work;
- Are curious and eager to learn new skills;
- Are eligible to work in the UK & Ireland for the duration of the placement.
