Job Description
We are seeking passionate Assistant Cost Managers and Cost Managers with experience in the gas sector to join our teams across our North, Midlands and Scotland Region operating from 8 regional offices, to work on a variety of interesting and challenging projects, both nationally and locally. You will be joining a growing team of like-minded people that have a passion for innovation and delivering cutting edge solutions.
As an Assistant Cost Manager/Cost Manager, you will be expected to support the project team to successfully manage and deliver capital investment projects which will include gas transmission and storage projects. This role involves providing client-side cost management support during all stages of the project delivery lifecycle from option studies, option development, construction tender support through to NEC contract administration.
Here’s what you’ll do:
- Support the successful delivery of cost/commercial management commissions.
- Ensure commissions are managed and completed efficiently, within budget and to the client’s satisfaction.
- Assist in monitoring project risks (threats and opportunities).
- Prepare supporting cost reports and assist in project reviews at appropriate points throughout the project lifecycle.
- Attend project meetings, taking responsibility for cost/commercial matters.
- Lead support to project managers on contract management services on NEC4 contracts.
- Advise the client on procurement strategies and review tender documentation.
- Assist in the successful delivery of multi-disciplinary gas transmission and storage projects.
- Actively manage contractors and subcontractors’ payments and final accounts.
- Develop strong relationships with clients and members of the cross-functional team.
- Support business development opportunities with existing and new clients.

Qualifications
Ready to push the limits of what’s possible? Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Experience of working within a client organisation, either directly or through a co-location/secondment arrangement.
- Experience of NEC suite of contracts, particularly the Professional Services Contract (PSC) and Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC).
- Experience of working as part of integrated, multi-organisation, collaborative teams.
- Infrastructure and cost/commercial management experience, delivering projects.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Highly motivated and with excellent industry network.
- Relationship building skills – ability to build strong relationships with clients, teams, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- A team player with a ‘can-do’ attitude.
- Experience of working on projects in gas transmission and storage.
Professional Development: Engagement in continuous professional development, including pursuing qualifications such as those offered by the RICS and other recognised bodies.
Stakeholder Engagement: Ability to effectively communicate and engage with various stakeholders, including internal teams, contractors, and the public.
Financial Acumen: Skills in budget management and financial oversight to ensure projects are delivered within budget.
Adaptability and Problem-Solving: Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and solve complex problems that may arise during project execution.
Strategic Thinking: Understanding of the broader strategic goals of National Grid and how individual projects contribute to these objectives.
Minimum of five years’ cost/commercial management experience.
A degree in quantity surveying or another relevant subject.
A member of a related professional body (e.g. MRICS or equivalent), or working towards it.
