Job Description

About Our Team: Due to the continued growth and expansion of our Energy business, we are seeking to strengthen our Project Management Office (PMO) capability and to recruit an Apprentice Project Manager to support the delivery of AECOM’s Great Grid Programme (GGP). This role is intended to start in July 2026, with a view to enrolling with a training provider and commencing external training in September 2026.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop a career in project management within a major infrastructure programme, gaining valuable work experience and developing core delivery skills, with mentoring from professionals within our established and high-performing teams.

This role will sit within the Energy business unit, reporting to the GGP PMO Lead, and will play a key role in supporting programme governance, coordination and delivery across AECOM’s Great Grid Programme. The PMO is central to ensuring effective planning, reporting, risk management and stakeholder coordination across a complex and high-profile portfolio of projects that are critical to the UK’s energy transition.

Our GGP PMO work includes:

  • Supporting programme-wide coordination across multiple project workstreams to ensure successful delivery
  • Assisting with project planning, scheduling, reporting and performance tracking
  • Supporting risk, issue and change management processes
  • Working with project teams and stakeholders to ensure alignment with programme controls and governance requirements
  • Contributing to the development and continuous improvement of PMO processes, tools and reporting

The Great Grid Programme supports the transformation and reinforcement of the electricity transmission network, facilitating the integration of renewable energy and helping to deliver a more resilient and sustainable energy system.

Here’s what you’ll do: As an Apprentice Project Manager, you will be required to support the GGP PMO. Responsibilities will also include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting project directors, managers, and wider project teams in the delivery of projects, including environmental impact assessments.
  • Supporting on the governance and financial control of Projects
  • Supporting on project change control
  • Stakeholder and communications management
  • Estimating, Planning and Scheduling
  • Procurement and Contract Management
  • Risk Management
  • Quality Management
  • Attendance at and participation in project team meetings, client meetings and internal meetings, including training sessions
  • Prioritising tasks and meeting commitments on an ongoing basis and taking ownership and responsibility for the completion and quality of work.
  • Ensuring health and safety issues are embedded in project delivery from the outset; and
  • Becoming an integral and valued member of the Environment team.

On the job support and learning When an apprentice starts at AECOM, we pair them with a senior member of the team who will guide and mentor them through their initial period working on live projects and business development tasks, to support with any technical queries. We also offer our apprentices the flexibility of working on a range of projects in the various service offerings and technical specialisms that our Practice delivers. This helps establish their areas of interest, and develops a firm sustainability grounding, that will allow our apprentice to choose the direction of their career.

Apprentice Development Programme You will complete a Project Manager Degree Apprenticeship Project Manager - Courses - Leeds Trinity University which will be delivered through a blended learning approach. Apprentices benefit from face-to-face and online lectures and seminars, delivered by Leeds Trinity University.

In addition to this, apprentices will also complete independent research activities which can be undertaken in the workplace - our Apprentice ADVANCE programme is designed to help you build your career in AECOM. You will attend several instructor-led training sessions where you will meet and hear from people across the business and take part in a series of interactive activities to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in your role. We will provide you with all the support and tools you need to achieve your professional development ambitions, including Chartership with the relevant international professional institution. Professional institute qualifications you may be able to work towards e.g., Project Management Professional (PMP).

The successful apprentice will achieve a BSc (Hons) Professional Practice in Project Management.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible? This position is ideally suited to either school leavers or individuals looking to make a career change. Prior experience of working in environmental consultancy is not necessary, however, to be accepted onto the Leeds Trinity University Project Manager Degree Apprenticeship you will need to meet the following minimum entry requirements:

  • Apprenticeship candidates will typically have a minimum of 120 UCAS points (or equivalent). This would typically be at least three A levels at Grades A*-C including Mathematics and Physical Science or their equivalent or will have completed a Level 3 Apprenticeship in a similar field.
  • Minimum of 5 GCSE’s (or Scottish Standard Grade or Junior Certificate in Ireland) at grade ‘C/4’ or above, including Mathematics & English
  • Must hold a level 2 qualification in English Language and Maths Grade 4/C or above
  • Demonstrate an interest in and a desire to pursue a career in the environmental sector.
  • Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities.
  • Creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic
  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail
  • Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organize parts of projects
  • English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports
  • Able to carry out occasional remote working
  • Desirable but not essential Full UK Driving Licence
