We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our established and growing Water Team, with opportunities to be based across our North and Midlands offices – Birmingham, Chesterfield, Leeds and Manchester – and benefit from a flexible hybrid working model.
Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design
- Design and review of mechanical elements in wastewater and water infrastructure/treatment projects.
- Perform site visits, conduct surveys, and liaise with clients, contractors and suppliers.
- Design pumping stations, screens, grit removal plants, penstocks, valves and other components.
- Calculate headloss, conduct pumping system analysis and select pumps.
- Develop plant and pipework layouts and produce technical specifications, Wimes datasheets, valve schedules, equipment schedules, lifting strategies and P&IDs.
- Project Stages
- Engage in all design stages (Feasibility, Outline, Detail, Construction Design) while ensuring compliance with National and International Design Standards.
- Collaborate with other discipline teams locally and nationwide to deliver high‑quality technical solutions.
- Communicate effectively with clients and collaborators throughout the design and planning phases.
- Delegate tasks, oversee work and act as a technical mentor to junior staff.
- Bid Support
- Assist in preparation and management of bids and proposals, interfacing with clients to understand their needs and expectations.
- Project Delivery
- Ensure delivery of quality designs within agreed budgets and timelines for AECOM’s clients (Severn Trent Water, Yorkshire Water, Wessex Water, South West Water, Southern Water, Thames Water, Irish Water).
- Produce and review client deliverables, including calculations, drawings and technical reports to relevant standards and procedures.
- Digital Strategy
- Help shape and adopt global digital solutions (BIM, Projectwise, intelligent P&IDs, AECOM’s pumping station generator) to improve quality, consistency and efficiency.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in the design of water and wastewater engineering deliverables, ideally including treatment schemes.
- BEng or MEng in a related engineering field with experience in water and wastewater treatment.
- Chartered (or near Chartered) Member of a relevant Professional Institution.
- Senior‑level consultancy experience within the water sector.
- Experience managing projects, delegating tasks and providing technical mentoring.
