Are you ready to support a team of talented engineers and consultants in shaping the future of the water industry? Join our dynamic and multidisciplinary Water Environment team in one of our rapidly growing UK offices, working in a flexible hybrid model.
As a Principal Water Quality Modeller, you will be a senior technical resource who guides junior staff and enhances our offering to water utilities, industrial clients, government agencies and local authorities. You will act as technical lead on a range of water quality projects, collaborating with hydrologists, network modellers and engineers.
Principal Accountabilities
- Conceptualise and scope modelling approaches, considering risks and opportunities.
- Build and check water‑quality models for studies such as integrated water‑management plans, permitting studies and EIAs.
- Produce and review high‑quality technical reports documenting model build and uncertainties.
- Lead and contribute to tenders from innovative one‑off projects to multi‑million pound framework contracts.
- Mentor staff to support their professional development.
- Build relationships with clients and across technical disciplines.
- Keep up‑to‑date with legislation and guidelines affecting our services.
- Use project‑management systems to deliver outputs within agreed programme and budget.
- Work closely with clients and technical teams to deliver fluvial and coastal surface‑water quality projects.
Qualifications
- Expertise in water‑quality science, including knowledge of compounds such as cryptosporidium, PFAS, geosmin and disinfection by‑products and effective treatment.
- Significant experience in fluvial and/or coastal water‑quality modelling, including Environment Agency requirements for UPM or WINEP studies.
- Experience with mass‑balance calculations (flow‑weighted, Monte Carlo) and hydrological assessment tools such as REFH2, FEH.
- Practical knowledge of scripting (Python, R, Anaconda) and strong GIS skills (QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo).
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in hydrology, engineering, mathematics or related discipline.
- Experience in technical project delivery, from bid preparation to project management, and strong report‑writing skills.
