Graduate Electrical Engineer (Renewable Energy)

Our Renewable Energy team are seeking graduates within their Glasgow or Edinburgh offices starting from August 2026 onwards.

Here\'s what you\'ll do:

Successful candidates will be deployed to work predominately on solar projects however will have the opportunity to work on different projects providing electrical support for the following types of technologies.

  • Onshore and offshore wind
  • Solar PV
  • Hydroelectric – run of river and pumped storage.
  • Hydrogen production and storage
  • Battery energy storage systems (BESS)

Projects include all stages of design from feasibility to detailed design and site construction supervision both in the UK and internationally. Our clients are a mix between large energy utility generators to private developers.

A typical project example:

Lancaster University Solar Farm – AECOM was awarded the contract following the Client’s successful planning application for a private wire ground mount solar farm PV development. AECOM completed a reference design and prepared a full pack for tendering; this included the preparation of technical specifications and clients’ requirements. AECOM are currently acting as the NEC Project Manager and Owner’s Engineer during the build and commissioning of the site.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the delivery of consultancy services on renewable energy engineering projects, including undertaking site visits / supervision.
  • Providing input into feasibility level studies for renewable energy projects in conjunction with wider AECOM teams.
  • Preparation of technical reports.
  • Preparation of detailed design information.
  • Assisting in securing work with renewable energy developers and their supply chain.

When a graduate starts at AECOM, we pair them with a senior member of the team who will guide and mentor them through their initial period working on live projects and business development tasks, to support with any technical queries.

Graduate Development Programme

Our 2-year graduate ADVANCE programme is designed to help you build your career in AECOM. You will attend several instructor-led training sessions where you will meet and hear from people across the business and take part in a series of interactive activities to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in your role. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • BEng Electrical Engineering
  • MSc/MEng would be an advantage.
  • A 2:1 (or equivalent) degree classification or above.
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to continued education and improvement through participating in our approved training schemes.
  • Demonstrable interest in a career in renewable energy.
  • Good Microsoft Office skills essential such as Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external clients, both verbally & in writing with the confidence to engage with a variety of people (clients, colleagues, stakeholders, and sub-contractors alike) and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss technical issues and capture feedback.
  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, with ambition and drive.
  • Ability to structure & prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently without losing initiative & focus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience in the renewable energy or related field (e.g. working for either a power developer, equipment manufacturer, or consultant)
  • Some familiarity with CAD and PVSyst would be beneficial
  • Driving license – some travel to site may be required with equipment.
  • Student member of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Working ability in a second language and/or relevant work experience outside the UK.
