Job Description
Our Renewable Energy team are currently seeking a Civil Engineering Apprentice to work in our Edinburgh office from August 26 onwards on a permanent basis.

Successful candidates will be deployed to work on different projects providing civil/structural support for the following types of technologies:
- On and offshore wind
- Solar PV
- Hydroelectric – run of river and pumped storage
- Grid connection works – cable route and substation civil
- Hydrogen production and storage
- Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
Projects include all stages of design from feasibility to detailed design and site construction supervision both in the UK and internationally. Our clients are a mix between large energy utility generators to private developers.
A typical project example:
- Lancaster University Solar Farm – AECOM was awarded the contract following the Client’s successful planning application for a private wire ground mount solar farm PV development. AECOM completed a reference design and prepared a full pack for tendering; this included the preparation of technical specifications and clients’ requirements. AECOM are currently acting as the NEC Project Manager and Owner’s Engineer during the build and commissioning of the site.
- Red John Pumped Storage Hydro – AECOM successfully supported the ILI Group to gain planning permission for the 450MW pumped storage hydro project. AECOM provided EIA, consenting, environmental surveys and engineering support from the early stages of feasibility through to a positive decision by the Scottish Minister.
Here's what you'll do:
When an apprentice starts with AECOM, we pair them with a senior member of the team who will guide and mentor them through their initial period working on live projects and business development proposals. Their initial role will involve a selection of activities potentially including:
- Supporting the delivery of consultancy services on renewable energy engineering projects.
- Providing support into the input of feasibility level studies for renewable energy projects in conjunction with the wider AECOM teams.
- Assisting in preparation of technical reports.
- Assisting in preparation of detailed design information.
- Assisting in securing work with renewable energy developers and their supply chain.
- Occasional site visits to construction sites would be a feature of this role.
Attend University on average 1 day per week for 4 years to gain a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering.

You will attend several instructor-led training sessions where you will meet and hear from people across the business and take part in a series of interactive activities to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in your role. We will provide you with all the support and tools you need to achieve your professional development ambitions, including Professional Registration with the relevant international professional institution in this instance the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Qualifications
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- The successful candidate will be enrolled onto a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course at Heriot Watt University or Edinburgh Napier University. This is a SCQF Level 10 qualification.
- Minimum of 5 National 5’s at grade C or above including Mathematics & English.
- A minimum of four SQA Highers at Grade BBBB including Maths to be achieved by the end of S6.
- Foundation Apprenticeships in a related discipline or recognition of vocational qualifications and experiential learning will be considered.
- Able to demonstrate an interest in and a desire to pursue a career within the civil engineering field of Renewable Energy.
- Hardworking and enthusiastic. Creative, practical, and adaptable.
- Self-motivated and organised.
- Proficient in English and with excellent verbal and written communication skills; and IT skills should include Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work in a team and independently without losing initiative & focus.
- Good numerical skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external clients, both verbally & writing.
Desirable
- Full driving license or learning to drive and willingness to travel on occasion is desirable (some site travel with equipment may be required).
