The Principal Water Quality Modeller will support a multidisciplinary Water Environment team across multiple UK offices, working within a flexible hybrid model. In this senior technical role, you will lead water quality assessments in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waterbodies, develop innovative modelling tools, and provide expert advice to water utilities, industrial clients, government agencies, and local authorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Conceptualise and scope modelling approaches, balancing risks and opportunities.
- Build and verify water quality models for studies such as Integrated Water Management Plans, permitting studies, and EIAs.
- Produce and review high‑quality technical reports documenting model construction and uncertainty.
- Lead and contribute to tenders, ranging from one‑off projects to multimillion‑pound framework contracts.
- Mentor junior staff to support their professional development.
- Build relationships with clients and cross‑disciplinary teams.
- Keep abreast of legislative and guideline developments that may impact services.
- Use AECOM’s project management systems to deliver outputs within agreed programmes and budgets.
- Collaborate closely with clients and technical specialists to deliver a wide range of fluvial and coastal surface water quality projects.
Qualifications & Experience
- Expertise in water quality, including compounds such as cryptosporidium, PFAS, geosmin, and disinfection by‑products, and effective treatment methods.
- Significant experience with fluvial and/or coastal water quality modelling software (e.g., MIKE+, MIKE21/3 HD/AD/Ecolab, InfoWorks ICM, SAGIS‑SIMCAT, Cormix).
- Knowledge of Environment Agency requirements for UPM or WINEP studies and experience building models for such studies.
- Experience completing mass‑balance calculations, including flow‑weighted, Monte Carlo, and other statistical approaches.
- Practical knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, R, or Anaconda; strong GIS skills (QGIS, ArcGIS, or MapInfo).
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in hydrology, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Experience in technical project delivery—from bid preparation and proposal drafting to project management—along with strong report‑writing and visual communication skills.
- Ability to clearly present complex technical information orally and visually to diverse audiences.

Based in one of our UK offices (Manchester, Leeds, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Dublin, Nottingham, Croydon, or Exeter) with the possibility of hybrid working.
