Job Description

Are you ready to deliver Traffic Control Engineering projects to clients across the UK and internationally? We are looking for a Senior Traffic Control Engineer to work within our national Technology Services business to provide services to a diverse client base - from strategic advisory services through to technical research, design and delivery related engineering services.

The Technology Services team works closely with clients and partners, largely in the Transportation Sector, although this role will also support other sectors due to its specialist nature. Our Clients are many and varied and span National Transport Authorities, Combined Authorities, Local Authorities and Contractors as well as the private sector.

Current and/or recent project examples are:

  • Bus Corridor Improvements for Transport for London (TfL), Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), West England Combined Authority (WECA), Derbyshire County Council, Swansea City Council, National Transport Authority (NTA) and Glasgow City Council (GCC).
  • Active Travel Improvements for West England Combined Authority (WECA) and National Transport Authority (NTA).
  • Traffic Signal Upgrades for Derbyshire County Council.
  • Public Realm Improvements for City of Wolverhampton Council (CWC).
  • Town Centre Improvements in Folkstone for Kent County Council (KCC).
  • Highway Network Improvements for Colchester City Council (CCC), CNGS Development.
  • Junction Modernisations for Glasgow City Council (GCC).

The team provides technical leadership of projects throughout the project lifecycle from feasibility, preliminary and detailed design stages through to performance monitoring and assessment.

Here’s a broad sample of what you’ll do as a Senior Traffic Control Engineer:

Deliver:

  • Provide specialist technical consultancy and design services for traffic control engineering projects for internal and external clients.
  • Produce design packages, which may include design layout drawings, design reports, ITS1827 forms, MOVA data sets and works specifications for junctions and crossings.
  • Contribute to RAMS, hazard logs and technical assurance evidence.
  • Provide implementation support in the form of FAT, SAT and MOVA / Bus priority / SCOOT Validation.
  • Prepare and respond to technical queries, departures, and assurance/approval gate reviews.

Collaborate:

  • Coordinate with highways, structures, drainage, geotechnical, environment and traffic teams to integrate technology with civil and electrical works where required.
  • Attend meetings and engage with clients at various locations across the UK.
  • Provide support and mentoring to junior members of the team.

Quality:

  • Ensure compliance with UK standards and guidance (e.g., DMRB, TSM, TSRGD), CDM 2015 and Safe by Design principles.
  • Support programme, cost, and risk management; contribute to bids, estimates and technical proposals where required.
  • Check that the quality of technical deliverables is in line with the client’s brief and AECOM’s quality procedures.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible? Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • BEng or equivalent in Electrical, Electronics, or Civil Engineering.
  • Knowledge of the latest traffic control engineering design standards, implementation support processes and traffic signal technology applications.
  • Proficiency in producing technically assured deliverables (e.g. AutoCAD, Civils3D), equipment schedules, ITS1827 forms, and MOVA designs including MOVA data sets and design reports.
  • NHSS8 / HERS registered.
  • Experience in traffic control engineering design and implementation support, especially in MOVA control.
  • Design skills in advanced traffic control modes (MOVA / SCOOT), and operations at junction and corridor level.
