The Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Lead – Transport is a senior leadership role responsible for driving AECOM’s SHE strategy across transport projects (roads, rail, aviation, ports and public transport). The role provides expert leadership to ensure the highest standards of safety, health and environmental performance across design, construction, and operational phases, supporting AECOM’s purpose of delivering a safe, sustainable and resilient transport network.
This role works closely with Transport leadership, project directors, design managers and construction partners to embed SHE excellence, regulatory compliance and a proactive safety culture across the portfolio.
Here’s what you’ll do
- Strategic Leadership
- Lead the development and implementation of the SHE strategy for AECOM’s Transport business, aligned with global AECOM policies and local regulatory requirements.
- Act as a trusted advisor to Transport leadership on SHE risks, opportunities and performance.
- Champion a strong safety culture, influencing leaders and teams to prioritise safety, health and environmental outcomes.
- Project & Operational Delivery
- Provide SHE leadership across transport projects during planning, design, construction and handover phases.
- Support bid and proposal teams with SHE inputs, methodologies and risk assessments.
- Ensure effective identification, assessment and control of SHE risks across complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Lead incident investigation, root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable SHE legislation, standards and client requirements across transport projects.
- Maintain and continuously improve SHE management systems, procedures and tools.
- Lead internal and external audits, inspections and reviews, ensuring timely close-out of actions.
- Stakeholder & Client Engagement
- Build strong relationships with clients, regulators, contractors and joint venture partners.
- Represent AECOM in client meetings, safety forums and regulatory engagements.
- Support clients in achieving their SHE objectives and sustainability targets.
- People & Capability
- Lead, mentor and develop SHE professionals within the Transport business.
- Build SHE capability across project teams through training, coaching and knowledge sharing.
- Promote wellbeing, occupational health and environmental stewardship across the organisation.
- Performance & Reporting
- Monitor, analyse and report SHE performance metrics, trends and leading indicators.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance SHE outcomes across the transport portfolio.
Qualifications
Ready to push the limits of what’s possible? Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Degree (or equivalent) in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered or professional certification (e.g. CMIOSH, NEBOSH Diploma, ISO 45001/14001 Lead Auditor or equivalent).
- Significant experience in a senior SHE leadership role within transport, infrastructure or major projects.
- Strong knowledge of SHE legislation, standards and best practice within the transport and construction sectors.
- Proven experience influencing senior stakeholders and leading change across complex organisations.
Desirable
- Experience working in a consultancy or professional services environment.
- Experience across multiple transport sectors (roads, rail, aviation, ports).
- International or multi-regional project experience.
