AECOM’s commercial function links the operational requirements of the business with the key corporate functions such as finance, legal and risk. We are looking for a Commercial Manager to strengthen our team. By providing leadership and expertise, the Commercial Manager, Environment, will report to and assist the Assistant Commercial Director, Environment, and other business leaders across our Environment BL, ensuring our bid submissions and projects are commercially robust and delivered to achieve business plan performance metrics.
Here’s what you’ll do:
- As Commercial Manager you will be focussed on Business Unit contract and commercial matters critical to business success, forming strong client and supplier relationships and AECOM’s wider reputation.
- When necessary, you will act as delegate for the Assistant Commercial Director, provide guidance and support to the Operations teams and other Commercial colleagues within the business as well as train and mentor Capture Managers, Project Managers, Project Approvers and others as necessary.
- You will provide commercial leadership across the project lifecycle including governance and strategic advice to bid teams alongside support from our Legal function.
Key Responsibilities:
- Proactive engagement with the clients and services delivered by our Environment Business Unit, and E+E BL as a whole, working alongside colleagues to deliver year-on-year improvement to the quality of our service and bottom-line metrics.
- Provide solution-focussed risk and commercial advice for bids and projects across the project lifecycle to maximise performance of the Environment Business Unit and wider E+E BL.
- Develop effective relationships across both the BU and BL leadership, including Commercial, Legal, Sales, Finance, Operations and delivery teams as well as ORM, Regional Risk Committee and counterparts in other UK BL’s.
- Provide functional support to wider project, market sector and/or business development leadership teams.
- Develop and mentor junior colleagues in the Commercial team, including the wider Capture Manager, PM / Delivery community.
- Develop and execute effective commercial strategies on bids and lead on contractual negotiations, escalating to the Assistant Commercial Director where agreed.
- Work with bid and proposal teams to support and critically analyse the pricing documents, qualifications and project execution methodology.
- Support the commercial and operations team’s business improvement initiatives.
- Enforce compliance with the Delegations of Authority (“DoA”) ensuring that the appropriate authorities are obtained.
- Guide and advise colleagues as to the proper use of the DoA and supporting colleagues in their preparation of risk committee submittals and presentation of projects to E+E GNG Board, the regional and higher risk committees.
- Deliver relevant Commercial training to the graduate development and other training programmes.
- Take an active and demonstrable leadership position in respect of Safety, Quality and Ethics.
Qualifications:
- Degree qualified in a business, finance, law, engineering or related discipline is essential.
- Post graduate business qualifications are highly advantageous.
- Professional status in project management, engineering, surveying or law e.g. ACCA, ACMA, CPA, MRICS, Law Society is preferred.
- Holder (or ability to successfully hold and maintain) of unrestricted UK government Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and (preference for) Security Check (SC) clearance levels to support teams working for our Defence / Nuclear sector clients.
- Suitable post-qualification experience gained across delivery roles or legal, commercial or finance roles within the Built Environment or Construction industry.
- Detailed working knowledge and experience of typical construction industry contract suites (including JCT, Govt Frameworks, FIDIC, NEC PSC/ECC types), including drafting and negotiating bespoke, project-specific agreements directly with clients and suppliers or their legal/commercial representatives.
- Pre-contract procurement and/or commercial management experience.
- A strong understanding of risk mitigation procedures and processes including an eye for detail which is solution focussed to enable growth in line with business risk appetite.
- Demonstratable commercial acumen, strong business analysis skills and the ability to interpret and understand data sets and reports.
- Familiarity and awareness of pricing strategies, risks and mitigations of working cross border (E+C, FX and tax).
- Ability to interpret and understand financial and commercial considerations relevant to the successful winning and delivering of work.
- Experience of both non-contentious drafting / negotiation, as well as dispute avoidance/resolution.
