Graduate Traffic Engineer – Leeds: Shape Safer Streets

Our Traffic Engineering Teams work throughout the UK&I and are involved in a wide range of projects from concept and preliminary design, traffic modelling, through to detailed design and implementation, with graduates gaining experience in all stages of a project lifecycle.

We focus mainly on developing and appraising practical solutions which require consideration of traffic flows, road geometry, cycle facilities, traffic signs, pavement engineering, traffic signals and intelligent transport systems. Our main aim is to create streets that are more pleasant and safe to use by our local communities.

When a graduate starts with us, we pair them with an experienced engineer who will guide and mentor them through their initial period working on live projects. Training is arranged on our software engineering tools such as AutoCAD/Civils3D and, when and where required, traffic modelling software including LINSIG, TRANSYT and VISSIM to ensure all our engineers have a full set of design skills. Early work will typically involve assisting in developing our designs through the different stages, attending meetings and workshops with our clients and other design professionals.

As a graduate develops, they are expected to take on more responsibility in managing our projects from inception through to completion. Candidates will use industry leading computer software and BIM modelling programmes while working on a variety of different projects including:

• Bus Priority and BRT Design
• Streetscape improvement projects
• Traffic management planning and design

Our Traffic Engineering graduates will also have opportunities to work on major highways projects as both Traffic Engineering and Highway Graduates work together and will rotate between projects so a broad range of training will be provided to all our Roads Graduates.

Qualifications:

• BEng in Civil Engineering, General Engineering, or B.A./B.Sc. Geography, with a 2:1 (or equivalent) or above
• MEng in Civil Engineering, General Engineering, with a 2:1 (or equivalent) or above, or M.A./M.Sc. Geography would be an advantage
• And/or MSc in Transport Planning
• Masters in Mathematics
• Enthusiastic, hard‑working, technically proficient, with ambition and drive
• Basic computer skills on Word and Excel are essential
• Good report writing skills are beneficial
• Ability to structure and prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole
• Ability to work in a team and independently without losing initiative & focus
