Job Description Shape the future of transport in Wales as a Highways & Traffic Engineer based in Cardiff, working with the Streets team on projects for Transport for Wales, Cardiff Council, Swansea Council, Newport City Council, and key regional frameworks. Design and deliver innovative traffic engineering and urban realm projects from concept through construction, contributing to safer, sustainable, and people‑friendly transport networks.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop preliminary and detailed designs for traffic engineering, streetscape, and local highway schemes.
- Create technical outputs such as drawings, reports, and specifications.
- Ensure designs meet standards, regulations, and client expectations.
- Collaborate with engineers, planners, and technicians across AECOM.
- Support and mentor team members, delegating and coordinating tasks.
- Deliver work within agreed timescales, budgets, and quality standards.
- Promote and apply Health & Safety best practices, including CDM responsibilities.
- Provide regular updates to the Principal Engineer or Project Manager on project progress.
Qualifications
- Experience in developing feasibility, preliminary, and detailed designs for local roads and traffic schemes.
- Knowledge of design elements such as alignment, drainage, pavements, road restraint systems, signage, and markings.
- Familiarity with cycling infrastructure, traffic calming, junction design, and footway/carriageway improvements.
- Understanding of relevant design standards including TSRGD, Manual for Streets, DMRB, and the Traffic Signs Manual.
- Aware of Health & Safety and CDM regulations.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
Preferred: BSc, BEng, or MEng in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
