You will be joining the dedicated care team for a beautiful 8-year-old girl who lives at home in Handsworth, Birmingham with her loving family—Mum, Dad, one older sister and three older brothers. As the youngest in the family, she is surrounded by constant care and attention, and her parents remain closely involved in every aspect of her wellbeing. She attends school five days a week, where she enjoys the routine, social interaction, and support it provides.
When she was two, she experienced a life-changing accident that resulted in a severe spinal cord injury. She is now completely paralysed and requires full clinical care and highly specialised support. Her diagnoses include diffuse axonal injury, unstable C0/C1 cervical spine, post-traumatic quadriplegia, and she requires 24/7 invasive ventilation. Her daily care also includes intermittent catheterisation, PEG feeds and medication, bowel care, cough assist, and nebulisers.
Experience is desirable but full training will be provided. Despite her complex care needs, she is a bright and expressive little girl. Although she is non-verbal, her family feel she has a good level of understanding and enjoys engaging through her favourite activities. She is very much a “girly girl” who loves her tablet, especially YouTube videos like Ben and Holly and Peppa Pig. She enjoys story time, listening to music—particularly nursery rhymes—and benefits greatly from a warm, calm and attentive presence around her.
She requires a highly trained and compassionate care team to support her both at home and during school hours, as well as to provide essential overnight respite for her family. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the life of a child and her family, working as part of a supportive, committed and skilled care team.

✨Know the Role Inside Out
Before your interview, make sure you thoroughly understand the responsibilities of a Care Assistant. Familiarise yourself with the specific needs of the child you'll be caring for, including any medical requirements like tracheostomy care or PEG feeding. This will show that you're genuinely interested and prepared.
✨Showcase Your Compassion
In this role, empathy and compassion are key. Be ready to share examples from your past experiences where you've demonstrated these qualities. Whether it's through volunteering or personal experiences, showing your ability to connect with others will resonate well with the interviewers.
✨Ask Thoughtful Questions
Prepare some insightful questions about the care team and the family you'll be working with. This not only shows your interest but also helps you gauge if the environment is the right fit for you. Questions about the daily routine or how the family engages with their daughter can be great conversation starters.
✨Practice Active Listening
During the interview, practice active listening. This means really paying attention to what the interviewers are saying and responding thoughtfully. It’s crucial in a care role to demonstrate that you can listen and respond to both verbal and non-verbal cues, especially when working with children who may not communicate verbally.
