The Role
This is a newly created role as part of our continued growth, offering the opportunity to shape and strengthen our financial control environment. This role offers significant exposure to senior leadership and the opportunity to take ownership of technical accounting, audit, and financial reporting in a growing financial services business. Reporting directly to the Head of Finance, the Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing statutory accounting, external reporting, audit coordination, and tax compliance. The role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the company’s financial records while acting as the key technical accounting lead within the finance team. This role does not currently have direct reports, but sits as a senior position within the team, working closely with the Head of Finance and CFO. In this role, success will be measured by the accuracy and timeliness of reporting, a smooth and efficient audit process, and continuous improvement in financial controls and processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Statutory & Financial Reporting: Prepare and review statutory financial statements in accordance with IFRS / UK-adopted international accounting standards. Oversee balance sheet integrity, including complex reconciliations and judgments, provide technical guidance on accounting treatments and documentation, review work prepared by the Finance Team, ensuring accuracy and adherence to policies, and support finance system enhancements and reporting improvements.
- Audit & External Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors, coordinate audit planning, fieldwork, and audit deliverables, prepare schedules and respond to technical queries, implement audit recommendations and strengthen controls where required.
- Tax & Compliance: Support preparation and review of corporate tax returns, VAT returns, and other statutory submissions, liaise with external tax advisors and authorities, and ensure timely and accurate tax compliance and reporting.
Person Specification
This role would suit a technically strong accountant, either from practice or industry, looking to step into a senior role with high visibility and ownership. IFRS 9 experience would be beneficial, however strong candidates without this experience will be considered.
Skills & Experience
- Professional qualification (ACCA / ACA). Will consider part qualified candidates.
- Experience in financial accounting or audit (preferably in the Financial Services Industry and IFRS 9).
- Strong knowledge of statutory reporting and audit processes.
- Experience working with external auditors and tax advisors.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience.
- Strong attention to detail and technical accuracy.
- Exposure to IFRS and/or complex accounting areas.
