Tax Disputes & Investigations

My client is a highly regarded, full-service law firm with a strong national profile and a track record in complex dispute resolution and regulatory work. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced lawyer who is interested in specialising in complex tax disputes and investigations. My client welcomes candidates from varied contentious or regulatory backgrounds who are ambitious, client-focused, and eager to develop expertise in this specialist field.

Requirements

  • Qualified solicitor or equivalent with experience in contentious tax, regulatory enforcement, or civil/commercial litigation.
  • Proven ability to handle matters involving HMRC or other enforcement bodies; experience with customs and excise disputes is advantageous but not essential.
  • Skilled in managing complex casework and delivering clear, strategic advice.
  • Strong communication, drafting, and analytical abilities.
  • Commercially minded and proactive in building and maintaining client relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on a range of tax-related disputes, including both direct and indirect tax matters, with a focus on effective risk management.
  • Act on cases involving enforcement agencies, including those relating to customs classification, valuation, and seizure of goods.
  • Represent clients before tax tribunals and in judicial review proceedings.
  • Assist with investigations into alleged tax irregularities, smuggling, and import/export compliance breaches.
  • Support clients in making voluntary disclosures and negotiating settlements.
  • Work closely with colleagues across complementary practice areas to deliver integrated advice.
  • Contribute to business development efforts and help secure new mandates.
