We are currently recruiting for an experienced Planning Officer to join a busy Development Control team on a 6-month contract. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a local authority environment, supporting the delivery of high-quality planning services and contributing to key development projects.
The Role
You will be responsible for managing a varied caseload of planning applications, carrying out site visits, providing planning advice, and supporting enforcement activities. The role will involve working closely with colleagues, developers, elected members, and the public to help deliver an effective and customer-focused planning service.
Key Responsibilities
- Process a range of planning applications, including outline, full, reserved matters, and major applications
- Validate applications and carry out consultations, negotiations, and site visits
- Monitor developments and manage discharge of planning conditions
- Present applications at Planning Committee meetings
- Exercise delegated authority where appropriate
- Investigate complaints relating to unauthorised developments and assist with enforcement procedures
- Prepare and serve notices, formal cautions, and provide evidence at public inquiries or court where required
- Provide advice and guidance to the public, developers, and stakeholders on planning matters
- Support and guide junior Planning Officers where appropriate
- Contribute to wider service projects and corporate initiatives
What we're looking for
- Experience working within Development Control or Planning Services
- Strong understanding of planning legislation and procedures
- Ability to manage a busy caseload independently
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Experience presenting reports and attending committee meetings is desirable
- Strong organisational and customer service skills
