Assistant Director - Environment & Enforcement

Pay: £49.62 per hour

Contract: Ends March 2027

Job Purpose

Provide strategic leadership for the Council's Environment & Enforcement services, ensuring high-quality, customer-focused and legally compliant services that support the Council's priorities. Lead service improvement, manage resources effectively, and work collaboratively with elected members, partners and senior leaders to deliver positive outcomes for residents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Environment & Enforcement Service, contributing to the strategic leadership of the Directorate.
  • Develop and deliver service strategies, business plans and improvement programmes.
  • Ensure services are safe, efficient, compliant and deliver value for money.
  • Lead and develop managers and employees, promoting a positive, inclusive and high-performing culture.
  • Manage budgets, resources and performance, identifying opportunities for efficiencies and continuous improvement.
  • Build effective relationships with elected members, partner organisations, regulators and local communities.
  • Provide professional advice and reports to elected members and senior leadership.
  • Ensure effective governance, risk management, health and safety, business continuity and emergency planning arrangements.
  • Represent the Council internally and externally, deputising for the Strategic Director where required.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Senior leadership experience in environmental, regulatory or public services.
  • Experience managing complex services, people and budgets.
  • Experience leading service improvement and organisational change.
  • Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and local government governance.
  • Relevant professional qualification or equivalent experience.
