Do you have experience in Metrology/Chemical testing? Do you have experience working to COSHH standards? Do you have experience with Rockwell and Vickers hardness testing? If your answers are yes to these, then this could be the role for you!
As the Materials Lab Technician, you will work within a Defence and Aerospace environment and support testing and analysis activities. The role involves operating and maintaining analytical instruments, conducting baseline tests, documenting results, and maintaining a safe, organized laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain analytical instruments.
- Perform baseline chemical, mechanical, and thermal tests and document results.
- Inspect product samples visually and record findings (defects, dimensional tolerances).
- Perform basic calculations (concentrations, % deviation, etc.) and compile data.
- Stock, distribute, and rotate consumables and equipment.
- Set up, dismantle, and clean apparatus; wash and store glassware.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and hazard-aware lab environment.
- Perform and log calibration checks on instruments.
- Identify and raise non-conformances, facilitating investigations and corrective actions.
- Liaise with stakeholders to understand testing priorities.
Skillset and Qualifications
- Knowledge of chemical testing.
- Metrology testing - using microscopes (metrology context).
- Hardness checking - Rockwell and Vickers hardness testing.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) accurately.
- Ability to manage changing priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Experience with SAP or similar systems.
- Continuous improvement mindset with a focus on efficiency and accuracy.
- Logical approach to problem-solving and data interpretation.
