We are seeking an experienced Senior EC&I Engineer to support a key client in Bolton, specialising in the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automated door and access systems. This is a technically focused role acting as a central point for Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) activities. You will work on a diverse range of systems—from pedestrian automatic doors to large industrial and safety-critical doorsets within nuclear, defence, transport, and other high-hazard environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical & Design
- Lead EC&I design activities across automated door and access control systems
- Design and develop:
- Wiring schematics
- Control panels and assemblies
- Cable schedules
- Produce detailed EC&I drawings, calculations, and technical documentation
- Ensure systems comply with required Performance Levels (PL) or SIL ratings
- Use SISTEMA to analyse and verify safety-related control systems (SRP/CS)
- Project & Site Delivery
- Conduct site visits to assess existing installations and define modification requirements
- Support installation, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance activities
- Provide fault diagnosis and troubleshooting support to site teams
- Assist with Functional Design Specifications (FDS) and project scoping
- Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
- Act as a focal point between:
- Mechanical Engineers
- Project teams
- Subcontractors
- External stakeholders and clients
- Support multi-disciplinary integration across departments
- Liaise with internal and external customers to ensure successful project delivery
- Act as a focal point between:
- Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Machinery Directive
- UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations
- Relevant British and ISO standards
- Review, check, and technically verify EC&I drawings and documentation
- Carry out approval responsibilities in line with company processes
- Contribute to Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), including raising and resolving issues
- Ensure compliance with:
- General Responsibilities
- Maintain flexibility to support project deadlines, including overtime where required
- Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role and seniority level
Essential Requirements
- Qualification in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND, or equivalent)
- Proven experience with:
- Automated doors, access systems, or similar electro-mechanical systems
- Strong understanding of:
- Electrical systems and control circuits
- Fault-finding and diagnostics
- Experience interpreting electrical schematics and drawings
- Ability to independently design compliant EC&I systems
Technical Knowledge
- Familiarity with relevant standards, including:
- BS EN 16005 (Pedestrian Doors)
- BS EN 12453
- BS EN ISO 13849-1 & 13849-2
- BS EN 60204
- BS 7671
- Experience producing EC&I documentation, reports, and specifications
- Experience performing engineering calculations (manual and software-based)
- Competence with AutoCAD 2D and/or Inventor 3D
- Understanding of:
- Motors, gearboxes, clutch/brake systems
- Sensors and safety devices
- Variable Speed Drives (VSDs)
- PLCs and programmable safety systems
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience with:
- Roller shutters, sectional doors, industrial sliding doors, or powered access systems
- Experience in safety-critical sectors (nuclear, defence, heavy industry)
- Knowledge of:
- Safety PLCs
- Interlock systems
- Emergency release mechanisms
- VFDs
- Experience using SISTEMA for PL calculations
- ECS/CSCS card
- Security Clearance (SC) or eligibility to obtain
