About the role

We are looking for a motivated and practical individual to join our team as a Trainee Calibration Engineer.

This is an entry-level position, and previous calibration experience is not required. Full technical training, ongoing support and practical guidance will be provided.

The role would suit someone who has an interest in engineering, mechanics, electronics or technical problem-solving and would like to develop a long-term career within the calibration and testing industry.

You will work alongside experienced engineers and gradually learn how to calibrate, verify, inspect and maintain mechanical testing equipment. The work will take place both at our facility and at customer sites across the UK, with some international travel where required.

Purpose of the role

To learn how to carry out the calibration, verification and basic repair of mechanical testing and load measurement equipment.

You will be trained to ensure that equipment produces accurate and reliable results in line with company procedures, customer requirements and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

What you will learn

Full training will be provided in:

  • Calibration and verification of mechanical testing equipment
  • Operating tensile and compression testing systems
  • Working with load cells, extensometers and force-measuring equipment
  • Calibrating Charpy and Izod impact testing machines
  • Using electro-mechanical and hydraulic test frames
  • Applying forces accurately and recording test results
  • Reading technical procedures, manuals and specifications
  • Producing calibration certificates and technical reports
  • Carrying out basic fault finding, adjustments and minor repairs
  • Basic electrical work and soldering where required
  • Understanding ISO/IEC 17025, UKAS and quality management procedures
  • Maintaining equipment traceability and calibration records

Key responsibilities

With training and supervision, you will:

  • Assist with on-site and in-house calibration work
  • Prepare, inspect and set up testing and calibration equipment
  • Operate testing machines, hand presses and deadweight systems
  • Apply forces and take accurate measurements
  • Record calibration results clearly and correctly
  • Assist with the preparation of certificates and reports
  • Check equipment before use and maintain traceability records
  • Help identify faults and carry out basic repairs or adjustments
  • Handle sensitive instruments and equipment carefully
  • Follow company procedures and quality requirements
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment
  • Communicate professionally with customers and colleagues
  • Support the team with job planning and scheduling
  • Take part in training and professional development activities

What we are looking for

Previous calibration experience is not essential. We are looking for someone with the right attitude, practical ability and willingness to learn.

You should have:

  • A genuine interest in engineering, mechanics or technical work
  • A careful and methodical approach
  • Basic practical or hands-on ability
  • The ability to follow instructions and procedures
  • Confidence using basic maths and measurements
  • A reliable, honest and professional attitude
  • A willingness to learn and take responsibility
  • The ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • A flexible approach to travel and working hours

Experience gained through college, apprenticeships, mechanics, electronics, manufacturing, maintenance or practical personal projects would be useful but is not required.

QualificationsEssential

  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Willingness to travel regularly and stay away from home when required

The following would be helpful but are not essential:

  • Engineering, mechanical or electrical qualification
  • ONC, HNC, HND, NVQ, BTEC or similar technical qualification
  • Experience using tools or technical equipment
  • Basic electrical, mechanical or soldering experience
  • Previous work within engineering, manufacturing, maintenance or testing

Travel and working requirements

This role includes regular travel to customer sites.

You must be comfortable with:

  • Travelling throughout the UK
  • Occasional international travel
  • Frequent overnight stays
  • Spending periods of time away from home
  • Working flexible hours to meet customer and operational requirements
  • Driving a company vehicle once authorised and appropriately trained
