The Role
As the Laser Cutting Supervisor, you’ll oversee the daily operation of the laser cutting department, ensuring production targets are achieved safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. You’ll lead by example, supporting your team while working closely with production, planning, quality, and engineering teams to ensure smooth workflow and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the day-to-day running of the laser cutting department.
- Lead, motivate, and develop a team of Laser Cutting Operators and production staff.
- Allocate workloads and ensure production schedules are delivered safely and on time.
- Set up and operate laser cutting machinery as required, providing hands-on support to the team.
- Carry out first-off inspections and ensure components meet engineering drawings and customer specifications.
- Monitor quality throughout production and implement corrective actions where necessary.
- Identify production issues, minimise downtime, and drive improvements in efficiency.
- Work closely with Production Planning, Programming, Quality, and Operations teams to maintain workflow.
- Train, mentor, and support team members to maximise performance and development.
- Conduct return-to-work meetings, probation reviews, and day-to-day people management activities.
- Maintain excellent housekeeping standards and promote a strong Health & Safety culture.
- Liaise with the maintenance team regarding machinery faults and planned maintenance.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and induction of new employees.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives across the department.
About You
To be successful in this role, you’ll have:
- Previous supervisory experience within a laser cutting or manufacturing environment.
- Extensive hands-on experience operating industrial laser cutting machinery.
- Strong knowledge of engineering drawings and sheet metal fabrication.
- Excellent leadership, organisational, and people management skills.
- The ability to prioritise workloads and meet production deadlines.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships across departments.
- Good IT skills and experience working with manufacturing systems.
Desirable Experience
- Experience with Bystronic, Trumpf, Amada, or similar laser cutting equipment.
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems.
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
- Forklift licence.
- First Aid qualification.
