Blackman & White is looking for an experienced Design Manager/Senior Design Engineer to bring fresh thinking, new ideas and a critical eye to our manufacturing design and engineering technology.
This is a hands-on opportunity to shape the next generation of our CNC cutting machinery, combining mechanical design, project leadership and team development. You’ll take projects from concept through design, prototyping, testing and production, while challenging existing approaches and identifying opportunities to improve our products, processes and engineering standards.
Work with a talented team collaborating across production, procurement, suppliers & customers, you’ll have genuine influence over how we design & manufacture.

We are looking for an experienced Design Manager / Senior Design Engineer to lead & deliver the design of our CNC cutting machinery. This is a senior, hands-on role combining engineering design, project management & team leadership. You will take projects from initial concept through design, manufacture, testing & production release, while leading & developing the Design Team. We are an established UK manufacturer of CNC cutting systems, designing & manufacturing innovative machinery from our facility in Heybridge, Essex.
Key responsibilities
- Lead, mentor & develop the internal Design Team
- Manage multiple engineering projects from concept to production release
- Remain hands-on with detailed mechanical & engineering design
- Produce & review 3D models, assemblies & production drawings using SolidWorks
- Ensure designs are robust, cost-effective & optimised for manufacture
- Manage prototyping, testing & engineering changes
- Coordinate external design consultancies & subcontract engineers
- Work closely with Production, Procurement, suppliers & customers
- Ensure projects meet agreed technical, cost, quality & delivery targets
- Drive continuous improvement in products & manufacturing processes
You will have substantial senior-level experience in engineering design & manufacturing, with a proven ability to deliver production-ready designs.
- Strong SolidWorks capability
- Experience managing engineering projects from concept through manufacture & testing
- Knowledge of multiple manufacturing & tooling techniques
- Experience across mechanical & electrical engineering
- Good understanding of production, procurement & supply chain
- Strong commercial awareness around design cost & manufacturability
- Experience leading & mentoring engineers.
- Strong communication & stakeholder-management skills.
