An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Protection & Control Engineer to join a leading engineering consultancy delivering complex energy infrastructure projects across the UK transmission and distribution sector. You will be part of a specialist engineering team working on high-voltage networks, renewable integration and critical national infrastructure. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of protection and control design activities while supporting the wider transition of the UK energy system.

The Role

  • As a Senior P&C Engineer, you will be responsible for the delivery and technical development of protection and control systems for transmission projects up to 400kV.
  • Key responsibilities include:
    • Designing transmission protection systems up to 400kV
    • Reviewing internal and external contractor designs
    • Developing tender estimates, deliverables lists and engineering programmes
    • Supporting and guiding junior engineers across P&C activities
    • Advising on protection design and design change impacts
    • Ensuring compliance with CDM regulations and engineering standards
    • Applying safe design principles for electrical network operation
    • Challenging and improving technical solutions and design assumptions
    • Delivering assigned engineering tasks to time, cost and quality requirements
    • Undertaking site visits and supporting site-based engineering activities
    • Identifying, assessing and managing technical and project risks
    • Attending client and project meetings as required
    • Supporting coordination across multidisciplinary engineering teams

About You

  • You will likely bring:
    • Strong experience in power system protection design and application
    • Experience working at transmission voltage levels up to 400kV (utility, consultancy or OEM environment)
    • Proven experience producing protection and control design deliverables
    • Ability to calculate relay settings and develop logic files
    • Experience producing detailed electrical schematics for substation P&C systems
    • Knowledge of protection schemes including busbar, transformer, feeder, reactor and circuit breaker fail protection
    • Understanding of SCADA interfaces and protection system integration
    • Experience working with IEC 61850 communication protocols
    • Experience producing SLDs, KLDs and substation layout drawings
    • Knowledge of panel design, cable schedules and associated secondary engineering deliverables
    • Experience using protection study tools such as ASPEN, ETAP or DIgSILENT
    • Strong collaboration skills across internal and external stakeholders
    • Ability to communicate technical issues clearly and effectively

Desirable Experience

  • TP141, CDAE or LCDAE authorisation
  • Experience with HVDC and FACTS protection systems
  • SCADA design experience (e.g. Zenon-Copa-Data)
