Advance TRS is supporting a specialist environmental consultancy in the search for a Principal Consultant - Geomorphology to join their growing technical team. This opportunity is suited to an experienced geomorphologist with a strong background in river restoration and natural flood management who is looking to combine technical leadership with project management and business development responsibilities.

The Role

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across a range of river restoration, catchment management and water environment projects throughout the UK. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will help deliver practical, evidence-led solutions that enhance river processes and improve environmental resilience. The position offers a balance of technical delivery, project leadership and client engagement, with involvement from bid stage through to construction support.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical leadership in fluvial geomorphology and river restoration design
  • Managing and overseeing complex projects through all stages of delivery
  • Reviewing deliverables and implementing quality assurance processes
  • Undertaking field surveys, geomorphic assessments and data analysis
  • Supporting construction activities and providing site-based advice where required
  • Managing project budgets, programmes and resources
  • Mentoring colleagues and contributing to internal knowledge sharing
  • Building and maintaining relationships with clients, regulators and stakeholders
  • Supporting business development activities and leading or contributing to tender submissions
  • Identifying opportunities for growth with existing and prospective clients
  • Contributing to strategic technical initiatives and wider company development

Candidate Requirements

Advance TRS is seeking candidates with extensive experience in river processes and restoration who can combine technical excellence with strong leadership and communication skills. Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Significant experience delivering river restoration and fluvial geomorphology projects
  • Strong understanding of geomorphic processes and sediment assessment techniques
  • Experience undertaking field investigations within river and wetland environments
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively
  • Strong stakeholder management and client-facing skills
  • A collaborative approach and commitment to knowledge sharing
  • Flexibility to travel throughout the UK for site visits and project work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Qualifications & Professional Membership

  • Chartered status through a relevant professional body (e.g. CGeog or equivalent)
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Degree in Geography, Environmental Science or a related discipline

Desirable Experience

The following experience would be advantageous:

  • PhD in Fluvial Geomorphology or a related field
  • Project management responsibilities on multidisciplinary projects
