Job Role: Design Manager

Salary / Rate: Circa 80,000 + Car / Car Allowance + Benefits

Location: St. Asaph, North Wales - Hybrid (3 days office-based)

Our client is looking to strengthen their Design team with a Design Manager based in their St. Asaph office in North Wales. Working across AMP8 projects for Welsh Water, the successful candidate will provide technical leadership and management to a multi-disciplinary regional design team, ensuring projects are delivered to the required standards of quality, compliance and programme.

About the Role:

As a Design Manager, you'll be responsible for:

  • Establishing and maintaining Framework Design Quality Plans and ensuring they are effectively rolled out across regional teams.
  • Line managing the regional design team, providing both HR support and technical leadership.
  • Acting as a key client point of contact for all design-related matters.
  • Supporting regional design teams and acting as a point of escalation from project level through to framework level.
  • Planning workloads and resources, allocating Design Leads and design teams across projects.
  • Establishing effective working relationships with Design Consultants where required, including setting clear onboarding expectations and required levels of detail.
  • Working closely with Framework Managers and providing design input at framework level.
  • Supporting the Head of Design with the recruitment of design engineers across the framework.
  • Working collaboratively with other Regional Design Managers and the Head of Design to ensure a consistent approach to QA compliance, process development and standardisation.
  • Supporting the wider business with tenders and pre-qualification submissions.

About you:

  • Proven experience managing multi-disciplinary design teams within the Water infrastructure or related sectors.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Design Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of clean and wastewater systems and processes.
  • Experience working with NEC contracts and within framework agreements.
  • Excellent understanding of the design lifecycle, including optioneering, outline design, detailed design and design reviews.
  • Knowledge of WIMES, DWI requirements, relevant design codes and legislation.
  • Good understanding of CDM 2015 Regulations and safety-by-design principles.
  • Strong organisational and workload planning skills, with experience leading and mentoring multi-disciplinary teams across varied projects.
  • Ability to provide strong technical leadership, make sound technical judgements and provide effective design governance.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with clients, consultants and project delivery teams.
  • Commercially aware, with the ability to consider cost, risk and programme when developing design solutions.
  • Proactive and accountable, with the ability to take ownership of design delivery from client brief through to construction support.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with a focus on collaboration, technical excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Passionate about quality, standardisation, innovation and developing high-performing design teams.
  • Proficient in the use of design management software and systems.
