Job Purpose
To lead the delivery and continuous improvement of the Route's rail energy management strategy, driving energy efficiency, cost reduction, carbon reduction, and regulatory compliance across railway operations, infrastructure, stations, depots, and associated assets.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve the Route's Rail Energy Management Plan in alignment with organisational objectives and sustainability targets.
- Monitor, analyse, and report on traction and non-traction energy consumption across the Route, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for performance improvement.
- Maintain and enhance the Route's Energy Management System in accordance with BS EN ISO 50001 and support ongoing certification and compliance activities.
- Conduct energy audits and assessments across railway infrastructure, stations, depots, offices, and operational facilities to identify energy-saving opportunities.
- Produce management information, performance dashboards, and energy reports to support operational and strategic decision-making.
- Develop business cases for energy efficiency, renewable energy, electrification, and carbon reduction projects, demonstrating operational, financial, and environmental benefits.
- Coordinate the delivery of energy reduction programmes and initiatives, ensuring achievement of performance, cost, and carbon targets.
- Work with engineering, operations, maintenance, and project teams to embed energy-efficient practices into the design, operation, and maintenance of railway assets.
- Develop and deliver training, guidance, and awareness programmes to improve energy performance and promote best practice across the Route.
- Monitor changes in energy legislation, rail industry standards, and environmental regulations, assessing impacts and ensuring compliance.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including train operators, supply chain partners, industry bodies, and regulators, to share best practice and drive innovation in rail energy management.
- Support the development and implementation of decarbonisation strategies, energy resilience initiatives, and net-zero programmes across the railway.
- Identify opportunities to optimise traction power consumption, station energy use, and asset performance through data analysis, technology deployment, and operational improvements.
- Provide specialist energy management expertise to Route investment, enhancement, and renewal projects to ensure whole-life energy performance considerations are incorporated.
Essential experience
- Rail sector experience
- Experience of implementing and maintaining an Energy Management System to BS EN ISO 50001:2011
- Experience of working in the energy management field with proven results
- Trained in Certified Measurement and Verification Professional qualification (CMPV)
- Able to demonstrate good numerical and analytical skills
- Able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Previous experience of designing training packages
- Able to demonstrate excellent influencing skills
- Previous project management experience
Desirable
- A Level 3 Recognised Energy Manager vocational certificate (Energy Managers Association)
- Evidence of continuing professional development
