We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Project Engineer (Civils) to support the successful delivery of major rail and infrastructure projects. The role will provide engineering leadership, assurance, and governance throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring that all design, construction, testing, and commissioning activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable legislation, industry standards, and company procedures.

The successful candidate will play a key role in managing engineering assurance activities, supporting project teams, and ensuring technical excellence across complex civil engineering works.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engineering Leadership & Assurance
    • Lead and manage the application of appropriate engineering standards across all project design and construction activities.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, Network Rail standards, industry regulations, and company procedures.
    • Provide engineering assurance throughout the project lifecycle from feasibility through to commissioning and handover.
    • Monitor engineering activities to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality project delivery.
    • Provide technical leadership and guidance to Project Engineers and wider project teams.
  • Design & Construction Management
    • Review and assure civil engineering designs for constructability, safety, quality, and compliance.
    • Oversee construction activities to ensure adherence to approved designs, specifications, and engineering standards.
    • Advise project and programme management teams on construction methodologies, engineering risks, and technical solutions.
    • Support testing, commissioning, and handover activities where required.
  • Risk Management
    • Apply quantitative and qualitative risk assessment techniques across projects.
    • Identify, evaluate, and mitigate engineering and construction risks.
    • Ensure lessons learned and engineering best practices are incorporated into project delivery.
  • Competency Management
    • Monitor and support the competence of Project Engineers and engineering staff.
    • Provide mentoring, coaching, and technical guidance to engineering teams.
    • Participate in competency assessments and development initiatives.
  • Audit & Compliance
    • Conduct engineering reviews and assurance activities.
    • Arrange and undertake contractor audits to assess compliance with safety, quality, engineering, and management system requirements.
    • Support internal and external audits as required.
    • Ensure non-conformances are identified, managed, and closed out appropriately.
  • Stakeholder Management
    • Collaborate with clients, contractors, designers, project managers, and operational stakeholders.
    • Provide clear technical advice and engineering recommendations.
    • Support multidisciplinary project teams to achieve programme objectives.
Required Experience

Candidates should have demonstrable experience in one or more of the following engineering assurance and leadership roles:

  • Principal Designer (Civils)
  • Designated Project Engineer (DPE)
  • Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM)
  • Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE)
  • Project Engineer (Civils)
  • Level 1 Engineering Assurance Activities
  • Engineering Event Reviews (EER)
Essential Skills & Qualifications
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards chartership.
  • Extensive experience delivering civil engineering projects within rail, infrastructure, transportation, or major construction environments.
  • Strong understanding of engineering assurance frameworks and governance requirements.
  • Knowledge of Network Rail standards, construction regulations, and industry best practice.
  • Experience managing engineering risk and assurance activities.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and provide technical direction.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience working on major rail infrastructure programmes.
  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations and Principal Designer responsibilities.
  • Experience in contractor and supply chain management.
  • Familiarity with testing, commissioning, and handover processes.
  • Audit and quality management experience.
