Qualifications and Professional Membership
- TechIOSH, GradIOSH, CertIOSH or working towards Chartered Membership (CMIOSH).
- NVQ Level 3, 4 or 5 in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent qualification and/or relevant industry experience).
- NEBOSH General Certificate and/or NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
- Relevant rail industry health and safety qualifications and competencies desirable.
Knowledge and Technical Expertise
- Good working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation, regulations, approved codes of practice, and industry guidance.
- Understanding and practical application of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM).
- Knowledge of rail, civil engineering, earthworks, fencing, and infrastructure construction activities.
- Ability to support the development and implementation of safe systems of work, risk assessments, and method statements (RAMS).
- Understanding of contractor management and site assurance processes.
Experience
- Minimum of 4 years’ health and safety experience within construction, civil engineering, rail, infrastructure, earthworks, fencing, or a comparable sector.
- Experience providing health and safety support on operational project sites.
- Experience conducting site inspections, audits, workplace monitoring, and behavioural safety observations.
- Experience supporting incident and near‑miss investigations and assisting with the implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Experience working with subcontractors and site management teams to promote compliance and continuous improvement.
- Experience monitoring health and safety performance and reporting findings to project and senior management teams.
- Experience delivering toolbox talks, safety briefings, and workforce engagement initiatives.
- Ability to provide practical health and safety advice to operational teams in a fast‑paced construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide proactive health and safety support across rail, civil engineering, earthworks, and fencing projects.
- Undertake regular site inspections and audits to monitor compliance with company procedures and statutory requirements.
- Assist project teams in the preparation and review of risk assessments, method statements, and construction phase documentation.
- Support incident investigations, identify root causes, and monitor the close‑out of corrective actions.
- Promote a positive safety culture through workforce engagement, coaching, and behavioural safety initiatives.
- Monitor subcontractor compliance and support effective contractor management processes.
- Produce health and safety reports, trend analysis, and recommendations for project management teams.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of company health, safety, environmental, and quality management systems.
Additional Requirements
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with site operatives, supervisors, managers, clients, and contractors.
- Self‑motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and digital reporting systems.
- Flexible approach to supporting projects across rail, civil engineering, earthworks, and fencing operations.
