We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for an exciting contract opportunity with a dynamic SME MEP Building Services Consultancy based in London. This is an outside IR35, contract role offering GBP45 per hour for a 6–month duration, with the potential for extension based on project requirements and performance.
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering high–quality mechanical design solutions for a wide range of residential and commercial projects. You will be an integral part of a small but highly skilled team, and will take ownership of project design, technical leadership, and client engagement. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to make a real impact on exciting, varied projects in a fast–paced consultancy environment.
Key Responsibilities- Mechanical Design: Lead the design of mechanical building services systems for residential and commercial projects, including HVAC, ventilation, heating, and cooling systems.
- Project Leadership: Manage projects from initial concept through to delivery, ensuring designs meet client requirements, industry standards, and regulatory compliance.
- Coordination: Collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines (electrical, structural) to ensure integrated, coordinated designs and project delivery.
- Client Liaison: Engage with clients to understand project requirements, attend meetings, and provide technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare detailed design calculations, drawings, specifications, and tender documents in line with project timelines.
- Site Visits & Inspections: Conduct site visits for surveys, inspections, and to provide technical support during installation and commissioning phases.
- Mentorship: Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and knowledge–sharing environment.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure all designs adhere to industry standards, codes of practice, and health and safety regulations, maintaining high–quality outputs.
- Experience: A minimum of 5–7 years' experience in mechanical design engineering, with a proven track record of delivering building services projects in the residential and commercial sectors.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong expertise in HVAC, ventilation, heating, cooling, and other mechanical systems design.
- Qualifications: A degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
- Software Skills: Proficiency in industry standard design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, IES, or Hevacomp.
- Knowledge of Regulations: Thorough understanding of relevant industry standards, codes of practice, and regulations (e.g., Building Regulations, British Standards, etc.).
- Project Management: Experience managing projects, including liaising with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information in an accessible manner.
- Self Motivation: Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
- Experience in Residential & Commercial Projects: Experience with both residential and commercial building services projects is essential.
- IR35 Compliance: Must be eligible to work outside of IR35.
- Hourly Rate: Circa GBP45 per hour (dependent on experience), outside IR35.
- Contract Duration: 6 month contract with potential for extension.
- Immediate Start: ASAP start for the right candidate.
