Role Description

This full-time Ecologist role is an on-site position based in Ashington. The Ecologist will carry out ecological field surveys, including habitat assessments and species monitoring, to inform development and regeneration projects. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing clear and accurate ecological reports, supporting Environmental Impact Assessments, and advising project teams on biodiversity, mitigation, and enhancement measures. The role will involve close collaboration with planners, designers, and external consultants to integrate ecological considerations into project design and delivery. The Ecologist will also contribute to maintaining regulatory compliance, supporting stakeholder engagement, and promoting best practice in environmental stewardship across Advance Northumberland’s portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Strong field work skills, including practical experience in ecological surveys and habitat assessment.
  • Knowledge of wildlife ecology, including protected species, biodiversity principles, and conservation practices.
  • Competence in botany, with the ability to identify key plant species and communities relevant to UK habitats.
  • Experience in report writing, including producing clear, accurate, and evidence-based ecological reports.
  • Practical involvement in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or similar environmental appraisal processes.
  • Relevant degree in ecology, environmental science, conservation biology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Familiarity with UK environmental legislation, planning policy, and ecological survey guidance.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Professional membership or working towards membership of an appropriate body (e.g., CIEEM) is an advantage.
