SCADA & Communications Engineer (EPC – HV Substation & BESS Projects) Job Title: SCADA & Communications Engineer Location: Glasgow Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent Reports to: Lead Electrical Engineer / Engineering Manager Sector: EPC / Power Systems / Energy Storage / Grid Connections Advance Grid Solutions specialises in the complete design, construction, development, and Operation & Maintenance of large-scale renewable energy projects, including Commercial & Utility-scale Solar PV, Battery Storage, and Balance of Plant projects across the UK. Our team has delivered more than 2GW of grid-scale renewable and energy storage projects. We pride ourselves on being a lean and customer-focused company, offering full turnkey services and managing all key interfaces from development through to construction and commissioning. About the Role We are seeking a SCADA & Communications Engineer to support the design, integration, and delivery of supervisory control, automation, and communication systems across our HV substation and BESS projects throughout the UK. This role is key to ensuring our energy infrastructure projects achieve safe, reliable, and cyber-secure control and data connectivity between site assets, substations, and remote monitoring centres. You’ll work closely with electrical, protection, and commissioning teams in an EPC delivery environment, from concept and detailed design through to FAT, SAT, and handover. Key Responsibilities * Design and develop SCADA and communication architectures for HV substations and BESS installations (11–400 kV). * Specify, configure, and integrate RTUs, PLCs, HMI systems, and network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls). * Develop SCADA I/O schedules, communication diagrams, and interface control documents (ICDs). * Define and implement communication protocols (IEC 61850, IEC (phone number removed)-101/104, DNP3, Modbus TCP/RTU, etc.). * Ensure robust and compliant data, control, and telemetry links between site assets, DNO/TO control centres, and client systems. * Support FAT/SAT, testing, and commissioning of SCADA and comms systems. * Liaise with DNOs, TOs, and NGESO for telemetry, RTU configuration, and interface acceptance. * Ensure designs comply with National Grid, DNO, and ENA standards as well as cybersecurity and IT/OT network security requirements. * Collaborate closely with Protection & Controls, Electrical Design, and Commissioning teams. * Maintain and manage all technical documentation and workflows via Procore or equivalent project management platform. * Knowledge of CDM regulations 2015, Health and Safety Work Act 1974 and other key health safety and environmental legislation. Qualifications and Experience Essential: * Degree or equivalent in Electrical, Electronic, Control, or Communications Engineering. * Experience designing or delivering SCADA and communications systems in HV substations, grid connections, or BESS projects. * Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols and control architectures. * Hands-on experience with RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and network devices from major OEMs (e.g., Siemens, Schneider, GE, SEL, Emerson). * Familiarity with network configuration (VLANs, routing, VPNs, firewalls). * Knowledge of IEC 61850, IEC 60870, and DNP3 standards. * Experience working within an EPC or design-and-build delivery environment. * You will need experience of Integrating BESS Controllers, Inverters, Transformers and Auxiliaries and the SCADA system, Coordination of data exchanges between SCADA – PPC, SCADA to EMS and SCADA to DNO/IDNO interface. Desirable: * Understanding of grid code compliance, telemetry, and DNO/NGESO interface requirements. * Experience with cybersecurity standards (ISO 27001, NCSC CAF, etc.) for OT systems. * Proficiency with Procore, BIM 360, or similar digital collaboration platforms. * Chartered Engineer or working toward professional registration (IET or equivalent).
