We are seeking an experienced Business / Enterprise Architect to support a large-scale underwriting transformation programme within the London Market insurance environment. This is a business-facing architecture role, operating at a strategic and solution level rather than a hands-on technical design or build position. The role focuses on translating prioritised underwriting business capabilities into application, service, and solution mappings across the existing technology landscape.
Working closely with senior business and technology leadership, the architect will help shape near- to medium-term delivery by providing structured architectural insight, gap analysis, and option evaluation to support informed decision-making.
Key Responsibilities- Business Capability & Architecture Mapping
- Own and evolve an existing prioritised underwriting business capability map
- Translate business capabilities into:
- Application mappings
- Service-level mappings
- High-level solution architectures
- Develop a strong understanding of the current underwriting architecture and operating model
- Identify functional and architectural gaps against prioritised business capabilities
- Evaluate how gaps should be addressed through:
- Enhancements to existing systems
- Introduction of new services or components
- Selective adoption of third-party solutions
- Perform options analysis for different approaches to capability delivery
- Articulate trade-offs, dependencies, and delivery considerations
- Provide clear architectural recommendations to support realistic and executable delivery plans
- Partner closely with senior leadership, including the programme lead, as a trusted architecture advisor
- Collaborate with multiple delivery teams, including:
- Core application teams
- Strategic analytics
- Actuarial teams
- Not a low-level or hands-on technical architecture role
- No coding or solution build responsibility
- Emphasis is on architectural reasoning, business capability translation, and decision support rather than detailed technical design
- Core Experience
- Proven experience as a Solution Architect or Enterprise Architect in complex transformation programmes
- Strong expertise in business capability modelling and mapping
- Experience within insurance underwriting environments
- Ability to operate effectively with senior, business-facing stakeholders
- London Market insurance experience (strongly preferred)
- Previous involvement in underwriting workbench initiatives
- Strong understanding of underwriting workflows, capabilities, and decisioning processes
- Comfortable working in ambiguous, early-stage design environments
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Able to distil complex information into clear, actionable insights
- Pragmatic, analytical, and delivery-focused mindset
The role supports an active underwriting transformation programme where: Strategy has already been defined. The focus is on delivering prioritised capabilities using existing platforms. Longer-term strategic options (e.g. policy admin replacement or underwriting workbench) will be assessed at a later stage.
