Role Description
Principally, the role is to manage the research and documentation of a wide-ranging collection of works of art, principally commercial stock and a private collection of antique porcelain, but also other antiques, paintings, furniture, and some contemporary works of art. Additionally, it involves object handling, exhibition arrangement, publication preparation, photography, image editing, as well as daily administrative activities important to a small business. This job would suit an organised, accurate, and responsible candidate with strong attention to detail, and knowledge of antique French porcelain.
Collections Management
- Cataloguing of objects including labelling, measurements, provenance, exhibition history, and descriptions.
- Evaluating, arranging, and tracking condition through condition reports and restoration.
- Liaising with restorers.
- Research of objects, including but not limited to 18th century French porcelain, pictures and paintings, other antiques, and contemporary works of art.
- Maintaining object records on both the company website and databases (Artlogic and Filemaker).
- Prepare export licences for international shipment of antiques.
Object Management
- To pack and unpack antique objects to high standards following in-house training and liaise with professional shipping companies.
- To assist with shipping and delivery of artworks.
- Liaising with various courier and delivery services.
- To assist with the preparations and setup of exhibitions and art fairs.
- Monitoring auctions for objects of interest both antique and contemporary.
Office Administration
- To assist with preparation of material for catalogues, website images, cataloguing of antiques etc as well as answering various antiques related PR enquiries and helping manage the image library.
- To manage the antique client mailing groups.
- To manage sales enquiries, invoicing and follow-up, by telephone, email, etc. primarily 18th Century, but potential contemporary when required.
- To maintain accurate records on the databases used for stock records and mailing lists.
- Manage in-house photography and editing/processing images using Photoshop.
- To prepare images and information packages for clients.
- To assist uploading and updating antique relevant information to the website.
