A UK-based organisation is seeking an experienced and technically capable DevOps Systems Engineer to join its IT and application support team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong infrastructure, networking, and SQL Server expertise who enjoys solving complex technical problems and supporting business-critical systems. You will play a key role in maintaining and improving server environments, supporting application deployments, troubleshooting production issues, and working closely with development and infrastructure teams to deliver reliable, high-performing systems. This role suits someone who is proactive, hands-on, and comfortable working across infrastructure, databases, networking, and application support.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain Windows Server environments
- Administer and support Microsoft SQL Server databases
- Participate in a 24/7 remote on-call rota following training
- Troubleshoot infrastructure, networking, database, and application issues
- Perform application installations, upgrades, and configuration changes
- Support deployment and implementation of new systems and applications
- Monitor system performance and proactively resolve incidents
- Collaborate with developers and third-party vendors to resolve technical issues
- Manage server builds, patching, maintenance, and environment configuration
- Support backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes
- Maintain technical documentation, procedures, and configurations
- Assist with networking issues including DNS, VPNs, firewalls, and connectivity
- Participate in system testing, releases, and change management activities
Skills & Experience Required
- Strong experience administering Windows Server environments
- Solid understanding of networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, and firewalls
- Experience supporting and administering Microsoft SQL Server, including high availability environments
- Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across infrastructure and applications
- Experience implementing and configuring business applications
- Ability to work effectively with development and support teams
- Experience supporting production and business-critical systems
- Knowledge of server monitoring, maintenance, and operational best practices
- Strong communication and documentation skills
Desirable Experience
- VMware or Hyper-V virtualization technologies
- Exposure to Azure or AWS cloud platforms
- PowerShell scripting or automation experience
- IIS, application hosting, or middleware platform experience
