How would you approach a system that needs to handle complex workflows, communicate with external services and remain dependable as usage grows?
We’re recruiting a Java Technical Lead for a Manchester-based technology business seeking someone who can turn those challenges into well-designed software. You’ll combine hands‑on development with architectural ownership, helping the team make decisions that stand up in production.
The Opportunity
Your focus will be the services and integrations behind the product: how information moves between systems, how data is stored and how applications respond when something goes wrong.
You’ll work closely with fellow engineers to resolve technical challenges, improve delivery and develop a codebase that is easier to test, operate and extend. This suits an experienced developer who enjoys guiding others while remaining actively involved in implementation.
Where You’ll Make an Impact
- Design backend services with clear boundaries and robust interfaces.
- Develop asynchronous processing and messaging workflows, accounting for failures, retries and data consistency.
- Choose appropriate approaches to data storage, access and performance.
- Deliver integrations that remain reliable when external systems behave unexpectedly.
- Improve confidence in releases through automated testing and effective deployment pipelines.
- Partner with infrastructure specialists on application resilience and production support.
- Give constructive feedback through code reviews and coach engineers through complex problems.
- Evaluate technical trade-offs and explain your recommendations clearly.
- Apply AI development tools to coding, investigation and testing, with careful review of their output.
- Follow work through to deployment and use production feedback to guide improvements.
Your Background
You’ll bring substantial experience developing production software with Java, Kotlin or Scala, alongside a strong understanding of distributed applications.
We’re particularly interested in evidence of:
- Designing services that communicate through APIs, messages or events.
- Working confidently with relational or NoSQL databases.
- Addressing security, testability and operational reliability during development.
- Improving delivery through version control, automated checks and CI/CD.
- Helping colleagues grow through mentoring and practical technical guidance.
- Taking responsibility for decisions and following them through.
- Using AI coding assistants effectively within a professional engineering workflow.
Experience with cloud platforms, containers, Kubernetes or infrastructure automation would be useful. Building new systems or working on business-critical applications would also strengthen your application
