Android Developer in Cardiff

Cardiff Full-Time On-site
Admiral Group

Most insurance companies build products around policies. We're building ours around people. You'll help build an Android experience that feels effortless, valuable and useful for young drivers, connecting customers with insights, rewards and services that make insurance helpful every day, not just when something goes wrong. As Android Engineer, you'll develop and deliver features from implementation through to release, working alongside experienced engineers to create high-quality mobile products while growing your technical skills.

Why this role matters

Our Android app is a core part of Veygo's next stage of growth. It needs to be fast, reliable and simple to use, supported by robust architecture and engineering practices that can scale. You'll contribute ideas and technical insight throughout development, using customer feedback and data to understand how your work improves the experience. You'll have ownership of your features, with support from senior engineers when tackling unfamiliar or more complex challenges. You'll also have opportunities to use AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools, learning how they can support development while maintaining quality and good engineering judgement.

What you will be responsible for

  • Develop and maintain Android features using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose and established architecture patterns.
  • Work on API integration, data handling, networking and caching, with support on more complex offline and sync requirements.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Backend Engineering and QA to understand customer needs and deliver well-tested features.
  • Write clean, maintainable code and automated tests, taking part in code reviews and acting on feedback.
  • Investigate bugs, crashes and performance issues, helping improve app reliability and customer experience.
  • Contribute to releases and improvements to tooling, documentation and development practices.

Qualifications

  • Practical experience developing and releasing Android applications.
  • Working proficiency in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with a good understanding of Android frameworks and APIs.
  • Familiarity with modern Android architecture, including ViewModels, coroutines and Flow.
  • Experience integrating APIs and handling data within mobile applications.
  • Experience writing automated tests, debugging issues and using Git in a collaborative development environment.
  • An understanding of CI/CD and mobile release processes.
  • Good problem-solving skills and an interest in understanding how technical choices affect customers.
  • Clear communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions, share ideas and work across disciplines.
  • The ability to take ownership of agreed work, recognise when you need support and respond constructively to feedback.
  • Curiosity about AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor or similar, and a willingness to learn how to use them effectively.

Our technology

  • Language and UI: Kotlin, Jetpack Compose.
Architecture: Modern modular Android architecture, coroutines and Flow.
  • CI/CD and release: CircleCI, Firebase App Distribution and Google Play.
  • Quality: Automated unit and UI testing, with BrowserStack for device coverage.
  • Observability: New Relic and Firebase Crashlytics.
  • AI-assisted engineering: Claude Code and other emerging agentic tooling.

Why Veygo?

At Veygo, we're here to unlock independence. For young drivers, getting on the road is a massive life moment–freedom, confidence, responsibility, and finally not needing a lift everywhere. For parents, it's a big moment too: letting go, while knowing their child is protected and supported. We make insurance the easy bit. Since launching in 2016, we've helped more than one million customers and sold over eight million policies by making car insurance simpler, more flexible and built around real life. Now, we're evolving from short term cover into a brand that supports young drivers through their first years on the road helping them build safer habits, manage costs and move forward with confidence. Backed by Admiral Group, we combine scale up energy with the strength, trust and expertise of one of the UK's leading insurers. Our teams get the freedom to experiment, the ownership to make things happen and the platform to build products that reach millions. If you want to solve real customer problems, work with smart cross functional teams and help shape the future of insurance for young drivers, you'll fit right in.

I joined Admiral in 2025 following a number of years in recruitment both Agency and In House. Knowing the brand and the presence that it has in South Wales it was an easy choice to make to come and be part of group and I want to support people looking to do the same. Why would you recommend Admiral? Admiral is known for its culture and support offered to colleagues – that's exactly what I've seen since I joined! This is 100% the reason I would recommend Admiral to others as it is somewhere you can enjoy work whilst building yourself career.
