We are looking for an enthusiasticStaffEngineer with a passion for building modern, modular, and high-performing frontend applications. This role focuses on the design, delivery, and maintenance of micro frontend (MFE) architectures, enabling scalable and independently deployable user experiences across our platforms.
You will work extensively with React, NestJS, and related technologies, contributing to both frontend and backend-for-frontend (BFF) solutions. With a DevSecOps mindset, you will build secure, performant, and resilient applications using modern software engineering practices, automation, and continuous improvement.
As a Staff engineer, you will lead by example—mentoring others, influencing technical decisions, and helping define best practices in frontend engineering and platform development.
Main Duties
Leadership
- Act as a technical lead for initiatives involving MFEs and shared frontend platforms.
- Provide mentoring and coaching to other engineers, promoting knowledge sharing and consistency across teams.
- Contribute to the evolution of our frontend and BFF strategy, ensuring alignment with platform goals and architectural direction.
- Drive technical discussions, lead by example in engineering excellence, and participate in engineering governance.
Implementation & Delivery
- Design and implement scalable and modular frontend solutions using micro frontend architecture and module federation.
- Develop applications using React, TypeScript, and NestJS, supporting robust client-server integration.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that support independently deployable frontend modules with strong testing and release automation.
- Ensure applications meet performance, security, and accessibility standards, including support for lazy loading, code splitting, and caching strategies.
- Contribute towards end-to-end testing strategies, ensuring comprehensive test coverage across the stack.
- Identify, document, and reduce technical debt to ensure long-term maintainability and scalability.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with designers, engineers, and product teams to deliver cohesive and consistent user interfaces across MFEs.
- Collaborate with architecture and platform teams to ensure alignment with cross-cutting concerns such as routing, authentication, and shared libraries.
- Champion a collaborative engineering culture through Chapters, Squads, and Guilds.
- Communicate complex technical decisions clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience Required
Technical Expertise
- Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer delivering modern, scalable frontend applications.
- Expert-level experience with React and TypeScript, including component architecture, state management, and performance optimisation.
- Hands-on experience designing and operating micro frontend architectures, including module federation and independent deployments.
- Solid experience with NestJS for backend-for-frontend (BFF) patterns and API gateway design.
- Skilled in building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
- Strong understanding of frontend performance optimisation (e.g. lazy loading, code splitting, prefetching, caching).
- Proficient in containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
- Experience with cloud platforms, ideally GCP or Azure.
- Knowledge of testing frameworks and methodologies including Jest, Playwright, and Vitest.
- Familiarity with mobile frameworks such as Ionic Capacitor is a plus.
- Awareness of Guidewire platform integration is desirable but not required.
Behavioural Competencies
- Analytical Thinking: Able to break down complex problems and define scalable, reusable solutions.
- Adaptability: Embraces change and works effectively in evolving environments and technology stacks.
- Initiative & Innovation: Proactively improves architecture, tooling, and practices to unlock team efficiency.
- Strategic Awareness: Aligns frontend and BFF architecture with broader business and platform strategies.
- Decision-Making: Balances trade-offs and makes well-informed technical decisions in a timely manner.
- Communication: Articulates ideas clearly and appropriately for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Mentoring & Leadership: Builds capability within teams and supports career development of peers.
- Accountability: Takes responsibility for engineering quality, security, and long-term platform maintainability.
