Role Description

Reporting to the Quality Manager, the position will serve as a key role working with the Engineering Department to oversee welding activities, ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, and maintain high-quality welding practices across projects. The role holder will be responsible for welding procedure development, inspection, quality control, and technical support to fabrication and construction teams.

Duties & Key Responsibilities

  • Welding Engineering & Technical Support
    • Develop, review, and approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Qualification Records (WQTR).
    • Provide technical guidance on welding processes, consumables, joint design, and heat treatment.
    • Support project teams with welding-related problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Inspection & Quality Control
    • Perform welding inspections in accordance with CSWIP 3.1 requirements and applicable standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, ISO, EN, API).
    • Ensure compliance with project specifications, drawings, and approved welding procedures.
    • Monitor fit-up, welding, and post-weld activities, including PWHT where applicable.
    • Review and verify NDT reports (RT, UT, MT, PT, VT).
  • Documentation & Compliance
    • Maintain welding and inspection documentation, including inspection reports, traceability records, and quality dossiers.
    • Ensure compliance with Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001) and project-specific QA/QC requirements.
    • Participate in internal and external audits related to welding and fabrication activities.
  • Coordination & Communication
    • Liaise with clients, third-party inspectors, and regulatory authorities on welding-related matters.
    • Coordinate with production, QA/QC, and engineering teams to ensure project timelines and quality objectives are met.
    • Assist in training and mentoring welders and junior inspectors.

Qualifications

  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related field.
  • Certification
    • CSWIP 3.1 (Welding Inspector) – mandatory
    • CSWIP 3.2 / Senior Welding Inspector – preferred
    • Additional certifications (e.g., AWS CWI, IWE/IWT) are an advantage.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of relevant experience in welding engineering and inspection.
  • Proven experience in industrial projects such as oil & gas, power plants, pressure, structural steel, or heavy fabrication.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW).
  • Familiarity with welding codes and standards (BS3834-2, ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, ISO 15614, API 1104, etc.).
  • Understanding of metallurgy, welding defects, and failure analysis.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience of automated/semi-automated processes.
  • Experience in Qualification and Testing to BS14732.

Soft Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
