The Workshop Manager / HGV Fitter is responsible for the maintenance, compliance, and operational readiness of Onelines mixed fleet, including specialist jetting, vacuum, and tanker equipment.
The role combines hands-on HGV mechanical expertise with workshop leadership, fleet planning, and daily coordination with Operations Managers and the Transport Manager to prioritise repairs and maximise vehicle availability.
More about the role:
- Lead the maintenance and repair of 28 HGVs and 46 vans/4x4s, including specialist tanker-mounted equipment.
- Plan and deliver all servicing, inspections, MOT preparation, and defect rectification to ensure full legal compliance.
- Carry out six-weekly inspections, general servicing, and pre-planned maintenance.
- Undertake reactive repairs to minimise downtime and maintain operational continuity.
- Ensure all work meets DVSA standards and internal quality expectations.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts usage, and compliance documentation.
- Provide the Transport Manager with timely updates on vehicle status, defects, and repair priorities.
- Manage workshop housekeeping, tooling, stock control, and safe working practices.
- Work closely with Operations Managers and the Transport Manager to prioritise repairs based on operational need.
- Communicate clearly with operational teams regarding vehicle availability, downtime, and expected return-to-service times.
- Support operational planning by ensuring vehicles are prepared, compliant, and fit for purpose.
- Assist with LOLER and PAT inspections when required.
- Ensure full compliance with transport legislation, company policies, and SHEQ requirements.
- Support environmental responsibilities, including efficient driving practices, reduced waste, and responsible use of materials.
- Ensure accurate reporting of risks, incidents, and near misses.
- Foster a positive, solution-focused working culture within the workshop and wider operational teams.
- Build strong working relationships with Directors, Managers, colleagues, and external suppliers.
- Attend meetings, support audits, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as required by the Company.
- Participate in annual appraisals and ongoing skills development.
- Identify training needs and work with the Transport Manager to maintain and enhance technical competence.
- Maintain a professional, enthusiastic, and proactive approach to all aspects of the role.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience managing and maintaining a fleet of commercial vehicles (essential).
- NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent experience in HGV maintenance.
- Strong diagnostic and mechanical skills across HGVs, vans.
- Experience working with grab, tipper, tanker, jetting, or vacuum vehicles (desirable).
- Excellent record-keeping and understanding of compliance requirements.
- Ability to prioritise workload in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with operational teams.
- Clean UK driving licence; HGV Class C licence required.
