MEL Environmental Solutions Ltd is a well-established provider of specialist environmental services, supporting insurance industry clients across the UK. As our operations continue to grow, we are seeking a skilled Handy Person to join our team based at our head office in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, with travel to project sites nationwide when required. This is a hands-on role involving equipment fabrication, building and warehouse maintenance, and commissioning of remediation systems. The ideal candidate will be practical, proactive, and confident working with mechanical and electrical systems. Strong communication, IT proficiency, and a willingness to support wider operational tasks are essential. Responsibilities of the role include:
- Conducting weekly and monthly building inspections (fire alarms, lighting, racking, legionella)
- Performing minor maintenance and repairs to the HQ building and yard
- Fabricating and assembling specialist remediation equipment (e.g. vapour extraction units, oil-water separators, mobile treatment systems)
- Delivering and commissioning equipment at project sites across the UK
- Managing the annual servicing of the PID kit and ensuring calibration of technical equipment
- Operating a counterbalance forklift truck for equipment handling and deliveries
- Performing PAT testing and maintaining the PAT register (training provided if required)
- Maintaining accurate asset registers and service records
- Supporting new starter inductions by issuing tools, PPE, and updating documentation
- Assisting with general tasks such as painting, parcel wrapping, and occasional fieldwork
Qualifications/Skillset:
- Experience in equipment fabrication and electrical work
- Strong communication skills to work effectively with various stakeholders
- IT literate and confident using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) for stock checks and record keeping
- Counterbalance forklift licence required
- First Aid at Work preferred (training provided if needed)
- PAT testing experience preferred (training provided if required)
- CSCS card preferred (can be arranged if needed)
- Full UK driving licence required - van and fuel card supplied
- Flexible, proactive attitude with willingness to support varied operational tasks
